The Directorate of Culture Cusco reported that for conservation and security measures, the trail and visits to the Machu Picchu mountain will remain closed until May 28, 2025.
The Peruvian Ministry of Culture, the state agency in charge of the administration, preservation, and maintenance of the archaeological park of Machu Picchu and adjacent mountains, reported that it will, unfortunately, extend the temporary closure of the route 1-A Machu Picchu Mountain until May 28, 2025. This was announced through its local office in Cusco, the Directorate of Culture of Cusco.
This temporary closure seeks to ensure the safety of visitors and guides during the tour along the path of the referred mountain, as maintenance work and removal of loose rocks and unstable material from the road are still being carried out. This is due to the heavy rains that the area endured in recent months.
Thus, access to the Machu Picchu mountain will be completely restricted with no exceptions or exemptions, so visitors and tour operators are urged to take the necessary precautions.
What to do if I have already bought tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain?
If you purchased your tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain for dates prior to May 25 of this year, the Ministry of Culture provided alternatives for visitors, such as the refund of the total cost of the tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain, in person, at the offices of Culture in Cusco. Or exceptionally and temporarily, the change to route 1-B (Upper Terrace), or route 2-A (Classic Route designed), or route 3-B (Royal Route designed).
Note
As you can see, there are several options to visit and hike, not only to Machu Picchu, but to other fantastic places, such as Salkantay or Choquequirao. We invite you to take a look at them.
