Is this a premium small-group tour?
Yes. This tour is designed as a premium small-group experience with professional guides, organized logistics, selected hotels, fresh picnic meals on the Short Inca Trail, a Vistadome train return, and careful support throughout the trip.
Small groups make the experience more personal, flexible, and comfortable, especially during the Short Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain days.
Is TreXperience a local Peruvian operator?
Yes. TreXperience is a 100% Peruvian local tour operator based in Cusco. Your trip is operated by a local team with deep knowledge of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, Andean culture, and real mountain logistics.
Traveling with a local operator also means your trip supports local guides, chefs, drivers, hotel partners, suppliers, and families connected to the region.
How long is the hike on the Short Inca Trail?
The Short Inca Trail hike is about 13 km / 8 miles and usually takes around 7 hours, including stops, photos, explanations, and lunch.
You will start at Km 104, visit Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, reach the Sun Gate, and arrive at Machu Picchu in the afternoon.
How long is the hike at Rainbow Mountain?
Rainbow Mountain is a high-altitude day hike. The drive from Cusco to the trailhead takes around 3 hours, and the hike usually takes several hours, depending on your pace, weather, and whether you continue into Red Valley.
The hike is not technical, but the altitude makes it challenging. Take it slowly, drink water, and follow your guide’s advice.
What is the best time of year to take this tour?
The best time for the Short Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain is usually from April to October, during the dry season. The weather is generally more stable, and the views are often clearer.
The rainy season, from November to March, can still be beautiful because the mountains are greener, but you should bring good rain gear and be ready for changing conditions.
How difficult is the tour?
Most of the tour is easy to moderate, with cultural visits by vehicle and short walks. The two most active days are the Short Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain.
Short Inca Trail
Moderate. You’ll hike for several hours on stone paths, stairs, and uphill sections, but the pace is steady and there are stops along the way.
Rainbow Mountain
Moderate to challenging because of altitude. The trail is not technical, but the high elevation, wind, cold, and weather can make it demanding.
What is the weather like?
Weather changes depending on the area. Cusco and the Sacred Valley can be cool in the morning and evening, with strong sun during the day. The Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are warmer and more humid because they are located in the cloud forest.
Rainbow Mountain is much higher, colder, and windier. You should be ready for bright sun, rain, cold wind, and low temperatures on the same day.
Do I need a permit for this tour?
Yes. You need an official permit for the Short Inca Trail, and this must be arranged through an authorized tour operator. We manage this permit as part of your booking.
Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley require local entry tickets, but these are arranged during the visit and do not require the same advance permit system as the Inca Trail.
You can review planning details in our Short Inca Trail permits guide.
What will I see during the tour?
You’ll see Cusco’s top Inca and colonial sites, Sacred Valley highlights such as Pisac, Moray, Maras, and Ollantaytambo, the Short Inca Trail, Wiñay Wayna, the Sun Gate, Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, and Red Valley.
This tour is designed to give you a complete understanding of Andean culture, Inca architecture, mountain landscapes, and the natural beauty of the Cusco region.
Are fresh picnic meals included on the Short Inca Trail?
Yes. On the Short Inca Trail day, you will enjoy a fresh picnic breakfast and picnic lunch prepared by our expert trekking chefs.
This is one of the key differences of a premium TreXperience tour. Instead of a basic boxed meal, you enjoy fresh trail food designed to keep you energized and comfortable during the hike.
Do porters carry my personal items on this package?
This is a hotel-based package, so porters do not carry personal items by default on the Short Inca Trail day. You only carry a comfortable daypack with passport, water, rain gear, sunscreen, snacks, camera, and a warm layer.
TreXperience is committed to fair treatment of porters and support staff across all trekking operations, including proper logistics, respect, and responsible working conditions.
Which Machu Picchu circuit will I follow?
Your Machu Picchu circuit depends on official ticket availability for your travel date. After the Short Inca Trail, you will follow the route assigned for Inca Trail arrivals, usually focused on panoramic views. The next day, your guided visit follows the route assigned to your Machu Picchu ticket.
For updated information, review our Machu Picchu tickets and circuits guide.
Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
Yes, if tickets are available. Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets and must be booked in advance.
These hikes are optional, limited, and not included in the standard package.
Is Rainbow Mountain safe after the Inca Trail?
Yes, for most active travelers who are well acclimatized. However, Rainbow Mountain is a high-altitude hike, so it is important to rest well after Machu Picchu, stay hydrated, eat light, and follow your guide’s pace.
If you feel strong altitude symptoms, tell your guide immediately. Safety always comes first.
Can I upgrade this package to a luxury version?
This package is designed as a premium small-group adventure. If you prefer a higher level of comfort with private service, premium hotels, and enhanced logistics, see our Luxury Cusco, Sacred Valley and Short Inca Trail 5 Day Tour or contact us for a custom private upgrade.
Cusco, Sacred Valley, Short Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain 6 Days - Travel Info
This section is your practical “before, during, and after the tour” guide. It covers altitude, permits, Machu Picchu circuits, luggage, weather, Rainbow Mountain, food, safety, and responsible travel, so you can arrive prepared and enjoy the full experience with confidence.
Altitude and acclimatization
This itinerary includes several high-altitude destinations, especially Cusco and Rainbow Mountain. Cusco is around 3,400 m / 11,150 ft above sea level, and Rainbow Mountain rises above 5,000 m / 16,400 ft in the Ausangate range. Because of this, acclimatization is important.
- Take the first day slowly and avoid heavy exercise.
- Drink water and eat light meals during your first days in Cusco.
- Avoid alcohol during your first 24 to 48 hours at altitude.
- Tell your guide if you feel headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or shortness of breath.
- If you have heart, lung, diabetes, pregnancy, or other medical concerns, consult your doctor before traveling.
For general health guidance, review the CDC travel to high altitudes recommendations.
Short Inca Trail permits and passport rules
The Short Inca Trail is regulated by Peruvian authorities and requires an official permit issued with your passport details. The permit is personal, limited, and must match your travel document exactly.
- Your full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, and passport expiration date must be correct.
- Bring your original passport to the Short Inca Trail checkpoint at Km 104.
- Photos or copies of passports are not accepted at the checkpoint.
- Once permits are issued, changes are very limited and may not be possible.
- The Inca Trail usually closes in February for maintenance.
You can review planning details in our Short Inca Trail permits guide. For official route reference, see the official Short Inca Trail / Km 104 route.
Machu Picchu circuits and entry times
Machu Picchu uses timed entry and official visitor circuits. Your exact route depends on the ticket available for your travel date. We plan your itinerary around the best official option available, so your Machu Picchu visit feels smooth and organized.
- Day 3: After hiking the Short Inca Trail, you arrive through the Sun Gate and follow the route assigned for Inca Trail arrivals, usually focused on panoramic views.
- Day 4: You return for your main guided Machu Picchu visit, usually through Circuit 3 or the route assigned according to official availability.
- Once you exit Machu Picchu, re-entry is not allowed with the same ticket.
- Optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets.
For updated details, review our Machu Picchu tickets and circuits guide or check the official Machu Picchu circuits and routes.
Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley: what to know
Rainbow Mountain is one of the highest points of this 6-day tour. The landscape is spectacular, but the altitude can make the hike feel more challenging than it looks. The route also includes the Red Valley, a quieter area with dramatic red-colored hills and fewer visitors.
- The day starts very early from Cusco, usually around 4:30 a.m.
- The drive to the trailhead takes around 3 hours.
- The hike can feel demanding because of altitude, wind, cold, and changing weather.
- Bring warm layers, gloves, a hat, rain protection, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, snacks, and cash in soles.
- If weather conditions are unsafe, the guide may adjust the pace or route for safety.
Rainbow Mountain is not a technical hike, but the altitude makes it a serious mountain day. Take it slow, listen to your guide, and do not push your body if you feel unwell.
Weather during the tour
This itinerary crosses several climate zones. Cusco and the Sacred Valley can be sunny during the day and cold in the morning or evening. The Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are warmer and more humid because they are located in cloud forest. Rainbow Mountain is colder, windier, and higher.
- Dress in layers every day.
- Bring rain gear even during the dry season.
- Bring warm layers for Rainbow Mountain and early mornings.
- Sun can be strong at altitude, so use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
For seasonal details, check our Inca Trail weather guide. For an official forecast, you can also check the official Machu Picchu weather forecast.
Luggage, hotels and train travel
This tour includes hotel stays in Cusco, Ollantaytambo, and Aguas Calientes. You can travel with your main luggage, but you should keep your daypack organized for each activity.
- Day 2: Your luggage travels with you to Ollantaytambo.
- Days 3 and 4: Travel light for the Short Inca Trail and Aguas Calientes. Bring only what you need for the hotel night and Machu Picchu visit.
- Day 5: Keep warm layers and hiking essentials ready for Rainbow Mountain.
- Train travel is easier with a small overnight bag and a light daypack.
Keep your passport, cash, camera, medications, and valuables with you at all times.
Food and dietary needs
Food is part of the experience. During the Short Inca Trail day, you’ll enjoy fresh picnic meals prepared by our expert trekking chefs. On the rest of the trip, meals are served in local restaurants or hotels according to the itinerary.
- Tell us in advance if you are vegetarian, vegan, have allergies, or any dietary restrictions.
- Bring extra snacks for long days, especially Short Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain.
- Carry a reusable water bottle. Single-use plastic bottles are not allowed on the Inca Trail.
- Bring some cash in soles for bathrooms, drinks, snacks, or small purchases.
Safety and responsible travel
Your safety and the protection of the places we visit are priorities. This itinerary includes protected archaeological sites, high-altitude hikes, local communities, and fragile natural areas.
- Follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
- Stay on marked paths and do not climb or touch archaeological structures.
- Do not leave trash on the trail, at Machu Picchu, or in Rainbow Mountain.
- Respect local communities, park staff, guides, porters, and other travelers.
- We carry safety support such as first-aid kit, oxygen, and communication when required.
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can learn more through the UNESCO Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu page.
Fair treatment of porters and support staff
This package is hotel-based, so porters do not carry personal items by default during the Short Inca Trail day. You will carry a small daypack with your essentials.
TreXperience is committed to fair treatment of porters, chefs, guides, drivers, and support staff across all trekking operations. We believe that one of the best Inca Trail experiences must also respect the people who make it possible.
After the tour
After this 6-day experience, most travelers continue to Lima, Lake Titicaca, the Amazon, or another destination in Peru. Since the tour includes early starts and two active hiking days, we recommend keeping your final evening in Cusco relaxed.
- Schedule flights with enough buffer time after the transfer out.
- Keep your passport, valuables, and travel documents with you.
- Rest well after Rainbow Mountain, especially if you felt the altitude.
- Ask our team for hotel, transfer, or extension options if you continue traveling in Peru.
