Getting Ready: Packing, Training, and Arriving in Cusco
Good preparation is key to fully enjoying your experience in the Andes. Having the right gear, preparing your body, and allowing enough time to acclimatize to Cusco's altitude can make a big difference during your trip. To help you get ready, we've put together the following recommendations:
What to Pack? The Right Gear for Any Weather
Packing the right essentials for an adventure in the Andes is important. Here are some of the key items we recommend bringing:
- Daypack: A small backpack of around 25 liters is ideal for carrying water, snacks, sun protection, and the items you'll need during the hike.
- Hydration: Staying well hydrated is especially important at high altitude. Bring a hydration bladder such as a CamelBak or water bottles with a total capacity of 2 to 3 liters.
- Weather protection: Weather in the Andes can change quickly. We recommend bringing a waterproof jacket, rain pants, and several layers of clothing that you can adjust as temperatures change.
- Sleeping bag: A sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures will help you rest comfortably during the trek. If you don't have one, you can rent one directly from us.
Additional Gear Rentals
To make sure you have all the equipment you need before your trek, TreXperience offers rentals of essential gear such as sleeping bags, trekking poles, and inflatable mattresses.
You can make your payment using any of the following methods:
- Cash: We accept Peruvian soles, U.S. dollars, or a combination of both currencies. We recommend using bills in good condition.
- Credit card: We accept Visa payments, subject to a 5.5% processing fee.
- Online payment: If you prefer to pay before your trip, just let us know and our team will send you a secure payment link.
Be Ready for the Rain
Because of Cusco's altitude and geographical location, the weather can change quickly and rain may occur at any time. For our mountain treks, we'll provide you with a rain poncho and a waterproof cover to protect your backpack.
Even so, we also recommend bringing a waterproof jacket, pants, and gloves for extra protection and greater comfort throughout the trek.
Pack Your Duffle Bag
During our adventure treks, we'll provide you with a duffle bag that our porters or muleteers will carry for you. Please keep the following in mind:
- Weight limit: Your duffle bag must weigh no more than 7 kg, including your sleeping bag and any rented equipment.
- Pack smart: Use plastic bags to keep your belongings organized and dry, especially if you're carrying electronics, documents, or valuables.
Training Tips: Get Ready for the Trail
Preparing physically can help you enjoy the trek with greater comfort and confidence. You don't need to be an experienced hiker, but it is a good idea to prepare your body in advance. Here are a few ways to get ready:
- Cardio: Walk, jog, or hike several times a week. Aim for sessions of at least one hour and, whenever possible, train on hills or uneven terrain.
- Strength: Add simple exercises such as squats, lunges, and stair climbing to strengthen your legs and improve your endurance.
- Train with a backpack: Take a few practice hikes carrying a backpack with a similar weight to what you'll use during the trek. This will help you get comfortable walking with extra weight and find the most comfortable fit for you.
Arrive in Cusco Early
We recommend arriving in Cusco at least two days before your trek. This will give you time to acclimatize to the altitude, relax, and explore the city before your adventure begins.
Pre-Trek Briefing
The evening before your trek, we'll meet with you to make sure everything is ready. This pre-trek briefing is the perfect time to review the itinerary, answer any last-minute questions, and meet your guide and fellow travelers.
📍 Where: TreXperience Office, Calle Garcilaso 210, Cusco 08002 (just a few steps from Plaza Regocijo) view location.
⏰ When: 6:00 p.m., the day before your departure
Before the Briefing: Complete Your Final Payment
To make sure everything goes smoothly, please pay your remaining balance at least 48 hours before the tour. You can pay:
- In cash: In Peruvian soles or U.S. dollars (bills must be in good condition).
- By card: A 5.5% processing fee applies.
During the Briefing: Final Preparations
This pre-tour meeting allows us to finalize all the details and answer any questions before your adventure begins. During the briefing, we'll go over the following:
- Passport: Bring your original passport and make sure it is valid for at least six months beyond your travel date.
- Duffle bag: We'll give you the bag that our porters or muleteers will carry for you during the trek.
- Additional gear: If you need to rent a sleeping bag, trekking poles, or any other available equipment, you can request it during this meeting.
- Hotel pickup: We'll confirm the location of your accommodation in Cusco and the pickup details for the day of your tour.
- Meet your guide and group: This is a great opportunity to break the ice and get to know the people who will be joining you on the adventure.
After the Briefing: Final Details
Once everything is ready, use the evening before your trek to take care of any final details and get some rest before the adventure begins:
- Last-minute shopping: If you're still missing anything, use this time to pick up snacks, warm clothing, or other essentials in Cusco.
- Light dinner: Choose a light, nutritious meal that will help you recharge without feeling too full.
- Get a good night's sleep: Departure will be early, so resting well will help you begin the adventure with energy and feel ready for the trek ahead.
