The new tourist signage system for the Machu Picchu circuits has been successfully completed, a measure designed to improve the experience for millions of visitors. This project aims to provide better guidance and smoother visitor flow within what is often considered the fourth wonder of the world.
The project “Improvement of Public Tourism Services at the Tourist Resources of the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park” was led by the Investment Execution Unit for Foreign Trade and Tourism (UEICET) of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru.
With an estimated investment of 339,062.35 soles (around USD 100,000), this initiative modernizes the infrastructure of Peru’s most iconic site, improving conditions for every Machu Picchu tour that reaches the citadel.
The Evolution of the Machu Picchu Circuit
Since 2021, specific routes have been assigned for visiting the Historic Sanctuary. Although access to the main area was not as restricted at first, management evolved after the COVID-19 pandemic in order to organize visitor flow and protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From 2024 to the present day, the system has been consolidated into 3 circuits with a total of 10 routes. As for Machu Picchu tickets, between 4,500 and more than 5,000 (during high season) are available each day, helping ensure sustainable management of this remarkable attraction.
Clearer Guidance throughout the Circuits
A total of 181 new signs have been strategically installed throughout the site. This improvement focuses on the three main circuits and on the trails that lead to the hiking mountains of Machu Picchu: Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu, and Machu Picchu Mountain.
The new Machu Picchu signage stands out for:
- Sustainable materials: Made of wood to blend naturally with the archaeological and natural landscape.
- Bilingual information: Clear guidance in both Spanish and English.
