You will also need a small, comfortable backpack to carry yourself each day. Below is the recommended packing list for the Luxury 7 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Essentials
The following items are essential for your Luxury Inca Trail Trek. Don't forget to take them with you in your day pack.

What to Wear?
For the luxury Inca Trail, Cusco, Sacred Valley and, Machu Picchu, wearing layers is the best choice. The weather can change quickly as you move through different zones, from cold mountain passes to warmer valleys. The best approach is to wear light, breathable layers you can easily add or remove as conditions shift.

What to pack in your Daypack
Use a 25 – 35 L backpack with a rain cover. Larger bags are not permitted inside Machu Picchu and must be stored in lockers; compliance is based on the bag’s size, not capacity. Any extra belongings can be stored at your hotel or in the TreXperience storeroom in Cusco for free.
You’ll use the Daypack every day, so make sure it’s lightweight, comfortable, and good quality.

What to put in the Duffel Bag
For the Inca Trail, TreXperience will provide a duffel bag, and our porters will carry it for you throughout the trek. The duffel bag must weigh a maximum of 10 kg / 22 lb. Duffel bags are issued the day before the trek and remain available at each campsite.

Luxury Inca Trail 7 Day - Travel Information
The Inca Trail follows a section of the ancient road system the Inca Culture developed in the 15th century. Known as the Qhapaq Ñan, this network once linked the empire across what is now Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. The trek covers a little over 42 km / 26 mi and is widely regarded as one of the most celebrated ways to arrive at Machu Picchu.
Our Luxury Inca Trail follows the same four-day route as the classic trek, but adds high comfort through upgraded gear and more personalized service. It remains a real high-altitude hike, so it helps to understand how the route and logistics work.
Cusco and the Inca Trail
Cusco was the centre of the Inca Empire and the departure point for the official road network. The Luxury Inca Trail starts at Kilometre 82 near Ollantaytambo at the Sacred Valley and follows these historic paths through mountain scenery, cloud forest, and archaeological sites before reaching Machu Picchu.
Inca Trail Length
The full route is around 42 km / 26 mi. Over four days, you’ll pass Inca ruins, cross high-altitude passes, and move through changing landscapes before arriving at the Sun Gate with views over Machu Picchu.
Inca Trail Elevation
Across the trek, total elevation gain is roughly 914 m / 3 000 ft. The highest point is Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,215 m /13,828 ft. Most of the climbing happens during the first two days:
- Day 1: approx. 305 m / 1,000 ft
- Day 2: approx. 244 m / 800 ft
- Days 3 & 4: more gradual, with descents and shorter climbs
Difficulty
The Luxury Inca Trail is moderate to challenging. Altitude and daily walking hours are the main factors, but with a well-paced plan, a private guide, porters, and added comfort services, the trek is realistic for most travellers with basic fitness and preparation.
Weather
The trail has two main seasons:
- Dry season: April – October
- Rainy season: November – March
At lower elevations, daytime temperatures can reach 27 °C / 80 °F, while nights at higher camps may fall below freezing. Dressing in layers is key.
Inca Trail permits
Hiking the Inca Trail requires a permit issued by the Peruvian government. Only 500 permits are released per day, including trekkers, guides, porters, and cooks. Peak-season dates can sell out fast, so booking well ahead is strongly recommended.
Sun Gate (Intipunku)
The Inca Trail finishes at the Sun Gate, where you’ll get your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. This entrance is reserved for Inca Trail hikers and is often one of the most unforgettable moments of the trek.
›› Read more about the Sun Gate
Return on the Observatory train
After your Machu Picchu visit, unwind on the exclusive Vistadome Observatory train, with wide windows, skylights, and onboard service and entertainment designed to make the most of the Andean scenery.
Depending on availability, you’ll travel from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, then continue by private vehicle to your hotel in Cusco.
Machu Picchu circuits
This experience includes Circuits 1 and 3 in Machu Picchu, covering the main viewpoints, the Temple of the Condor, the Sacred Rock, the urban sector, and more. Your guide will bring each area to life with context and history. Entry is subject to availability, so please confirm in advance.
