Cusco, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 5 Days - Travel Info

This section is your practical “before you go” guide for the Cusco, Sacred Valley, Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu 5 day tour. It covers altitude, permits, passport rules, Machu Picchu circuits, luggage, optional hikes, weather, and responsible travel.

Altitude in Cusco

Cusco is around 3,400 m / 11,150 ft above sea level, so the air is thinner and most visitors need to slow down for the first 24 to 48 hours after arriving.

It is common to feel a little short of breath on stairs or uphill walks, and some travelers may get a mild headache or feel more tired than usual while the body adjusts. On Day 1, keep things easy, drink plenty of water, and take breaks whenever needed. After a good night’s sleep, most travelers feel noticeably better.

For general health guidance, review the CDC travel to high altitudes recommendations before your trip.

Short Inca Trail permits are limited

The Short Inca Trail uses official permits with limited daily spaces. Once confirmed, permits are not flexible, and changes are very limited.

  • Book early for the best dates, train times, and Machu Picchu ticket options.
  • The permit must be issued with your exact passport details.
  • The Inca Trail usually closes in February for maintenance.

You can review planning details in our Short Inca Trail permits guide. For official route reference, see the official Short Inca Trail / Km 104 route.

Passport details must match

Your permits, train tickets, and Machu Picchu tickets are tied to your passport information. Please do not book with nicknames or incomplete names.

  • Your full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, and passport expiration date must be correct.
  • You must carry your original passport on the Short Inca Trail day and during your Machu Picchu visit.
  • If you renew your passport after booking, contact us immediately so we can advise you.
Machu Picchu entry times and circuits

Machu Picchu uses timed entry and assigned circuits. We plan your schedule around the best ticket available for your date, so your visit runs as smoothly as possible.

Since June 1, 2024, Machu Picchu entry has been arranged into three circuits with ten one-way routes. You must follow the exact route printed on your ticket, and once you exit, there is no re-entry. Booking early gives you better chances of preferred circuits and entry times.

For more details, review our Machu Picchu tickets and circuits guide or check the official Machu Picchu circuits and routes.

Circuit 1: Panoramic viewpoint routes

  • Best for upper viewpoints, classic photos, and mountain route options.
  • Includes routes such as Upper Terraces, Intipunku during high season, Inca Bridge during high season, and Machu Picchu Mountain.

Circuit 2: Classic Machu Picchu circuit

  • Often considered one of the most complete routes for the main archaeological areas and classic viewpoints, depending on availability.

Circuit 3: Lower entrance and royal areas

  • Includes lower-sector areas and optional routes such as Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu, or Great Cavern when available.
Train travel and luggage

Train services have luggage rules, and moving around is much easier when you pack light for Aguas Calientes. Keep your passport, rain jacket, warm layer, camera, and personal essentials in your daypack.

  • Leave large luggage at your Cusco hotel or in secure storage if needed.
  • Use a small overnight bag for Aguas Calientes.
  • Carry your passport and valuables with you at all times.
Optional hikes need extra tickets

Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets and must be reserved in advance. They are not included in the standard package and can sell out quickly.

If you want one of these hikes, tell us when booking so we can check availability and recommend the best option for your itinerary.

Weather and what to wear

Cusco and the Sacred Valley can be cool in the morning and evening, with strong sun during the day. The Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu can be warmer and more humid because they pass through cloud forest.

  • Dress in light layers that you can add or remove easily.
  • Bring rain protection, even during the dry season.
  • Wear good walking or hiking shoes for the Short Inca Trail.
  • Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for strong Andean sun.

For seasonal details, check our Inca Trail weather guide. For an official forecast, you can also check the official Machu Picchu weather forecast.

Fair treatment of porters and support staff

This is a hotel-based Short Inca Trail package, so porters do not carry personal items by default on the hiking day. You will carry a small daypack with your essentials.

How difficult is the tour overall?

Most of the tour is easy sightseeing. The hardest day is Day 3, the Short Inca Trail, which is moderate because it includes uphill sections, stone steps, and several hours of hiking.

You do not need to be an expert hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for 6 to 7 hours with breaks.

How long is the Short Inca Trail hike?

The Short Inca Trail section is about 13 km / 8 miles and usually takes around 7 hours, including stops, explanations, photos, and lunch.

Do I need permits for the Short Inca Trail?
