Lares Hot Springs and Machu Picchu 2 Day Tour Full Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Calca Market – Ancashmarca – Puya de Raimondi – 7 Waterfalls – Lares Hot Springs – ADAL Weaving – Aguas Calientes

Your day starts with pickup around 5:30 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco, or from the Sacred Valley near Pisac by prior coordination. Breakfast is not included, so we recommend having breakfast at your hotel before departure or bringing your own box breakfast or snacks for the road. We then drive into the Sacred Valley as the mountains begin to light up.

Our first stop is the local market in Calca. This is a simple and real moment of the day, where you can see local families buying fruit, vegetables, bread, and daily supplies. It gives you a first look at the rhythm of life in the Sacred Valley before we continue higher into the Andes.

Next, we drive uphill to Ancashmarca, a peaceful Inca site with terraces, stone structures, and wide mountain views. Because it is far less crowded than the classic Sacred Valley sites, the visit feels calm and personal. Your guide will explain why this place mattered on the routes between the valley and the highlands.

After Ancashmarca, we continue to a high-Andean area where the rare Puya de Raimondi grows. This giant plant, known as the “Queen of the Andes,” is one of the most impressive sights on the route. You will have time for photos, fresh air, and open views when the weather is clear.

Later, we reach the community area near Quiswarani, also written as Quishuarani or Kiswarani. From here, we begin an easy scenic walk toward the 7 Waterfalls, also known locally as Canchispaccha or Qanchis Paccha. The walk is not a long trek; it is a peaceful hike through mountain scenery, quiet fields, and fresh Andean air.

Once we reach the waterfall area, you will have time to enjoy the views, take photos, listen to the sound of the water, and feel the calm of this hidden corner of the Andes. This is one of the most refreshing parts of the day and a great way to experience nature away from the busy routes.

After the walk, we continue to the Lares Hot Springs. The warm mineral pools are surrounded by mountain scenery and are the perfect reward after the morning in the high Andes. Bring your swimsuit, towel, and sandals so you can relax and enjoy the experience comfortably.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant in the Lares area. This gives you time to rest, enjoy a warm meal, and experience the local side of the valley in a more authentic and comfortable way.

After lunch, we visit the ADAL women’s weaving cooperative. You will learn about traditional weaving, natural dyes, and handmade textiles created by local artisans. If you choose to buy something, it is a direct way to support local families and help preserve Andean textile traditions.

To finish the day, we drive to Ollantaytambo, where dinner is included at a local restaurant. After dinner, we board the Expedition train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, you will check in at your 3-star hotel and rest before your Machu Picchu visit the next morning.

  • Walking Distance: 5 to 7 km / 3.1 to 4.3 mi total
  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours walking at an easy pace, with stops
  • Highest Altitude: Around 4,200 m / 13,780 ft
  • Meals: Lunch at a local restaurant and dinner in Ollantaytambo
  • Breakfast: Not included
  • Train: Expedition train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes
  • Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate; altitude is the main challenge

Day 2: Machu Picchu Guided Tour – Expedition Train Return – Cusco

After breakfast at your hotel, we walk to the bus station and take the bus up to Machu Picchu. We aim for a well-timed visit whenever possible, so you can enjoy the site with good light and a smoother flow.

Before the guided tour, your guide will help you understand the layout of the citadel and the circuit assigned to your ticket. Then you will enjoy a 2 to 3-hour guided visit focused on the most important areas: terraces, temples, water channels, viewpoints, and sacred spaces.

Circuit 2 is included by default whenever available because it offers one of the most complete Machu Picchu experiences. If Circuit 2 is sold out, we will secure the best available alternative, usually Circuit 1 or Circuit 3, depending on official availability.

After the guided tour, you may have extra time depending on your ticket schedule. If you booked Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain in advance, this is when you would do the optional hike.

Later, we take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes. You will have time for lunch on your own before boarding the Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transportation will take you back to Cusco, usually arriving around 7:30 p.m.

  • Guided Tour Duration: 2 to 3 hours in Machu Picchu
  • Machu Picchu Altitude: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast at the hotel
  • Train: Expedition train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo
  • Difficulty: Easy

Important ticket note: Machu Picchu circuits depend on official availability. Circuit 2 is included by default whenever available. If Circuit 2 is sold out, we will secure the best available alternative, usually Circuit 1 or Circuit 3, and confirm the final circuit once tickets are issued.

Lares Hot Springs and Machu Picchu 2 Day Tour Travel Information

This section gives you the practical information you need before joining the Lares Hot Springs and Machu Picchu 2 Day Tour: route, altitude, weather, meals, hot springs, waterfall walk, local culture, trains, hotel, Machu Picchu tickets, packing, and how to prepare for a smooth experience.

What makes this 2-day tour different?

This tour is not a regular Machu Picchu trip. It adds a full day in the Lares Valley before your Machu Picchu visit, giving you history, landscapes, waterfalls, hot springs, local culture, and a scenic train journey to Aguas Calientes.

Choose this tour if you want a short experience with more variety than a classic train tour, but without committing to a multi-day trek. If you prefer a full cultural trekking route, consider the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu 4 Days.

Departure time and first morning

Pickup is around 5:30 a.m., depending on your hotel location. Breakfast on Day 1 is not included, so we recommend eating something light before departure or bringing a small snack for the road.

The early start helps us enjoy the Lares route with better timing, a more comfortable pace, and enough time to visit each place without rushing.

Route and locations

The route moves through three very different landscapes. First, you travel through the Sacred Valley and visit Calca market. Then you climb into the high Andes of Lares to visit Ancashmarca, Puya de Raimondi, the 7 Waterfalls, Lares Hot Springs, and a local weaving cooperative.

Later, you descend toward Ollantaytambo for dinner and board the Expedition train to Aguas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu. On Day 2, you visit Machu Picchu and return by Expedition train and private transportation.

Meals included

This tour includes lunch at a local restaurant on Day 1, dinner in Ollantaytambo on Day 1, and breakfast at your hotel on Day 2.

Breakfast on Day 1 is not included. Lunch and dinner on Day 2 are not included. Extra snacks and drinks are also not included, so you may bring your own or buy them along the way.

If you have dietary restrictions, tell us when booking so we can coordinate with the restaurants and hotel as best as possible.

Altitude and acclimatization

Altitude changes a lot on this itinerary. You begin in Cusco at around 3,399 m / 11,152 ft, travel through the Sacred Valley, then reach high-Andean areas near Ancashmarca, Puya de Raimondi, and the waterfall route, with sections around 4,000 m to 4,200 m / 13,123 ft to 13,780 ft.

The Lares Hot Springs are around 3,250 m / 10,662 ft, while Machu Picchu is lower at about 2,430 m / 7,972 ft. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 1 or 2 days before this tour, drinking water, eating light, and avoiding excess alcohol the night before.

For general health information, you can review the official CDC Travel to High Altitudes guidance.

Lares Hot Springs

The Lares Hot Springs are one of the most relaxing parts of the tour. The warm mineral pools are surrounded by mountain scenery and are a great reward after the high-Andean walk.

Bring a swimsuit, towel, sandals, and a change of clothes. MINCETUR lists the Lares Hot Springs as a thermo-mineral water resource in the district of Lares, Cusco, at around 3,250 m above sea level. You can check the official resource here: Lares Hot Springs - MINCETUR.

Ancashmarca and Puya de Raimondi

Ancashmarca, also spelled Ancasmarca, is a quiet Inca site between Calca and Lares. It is known for terraces, stone structures, and storage areas that show how the Incas managed movement and resources between different ecological zones.

The Puya de Raimondi is one of the most impressive plants in the Andes. It grows at high altitude and is known for its large size and dramatic flowering spike. Please stay on the path, avoid touching the plants, and follow your guide’s instructions to help protect the area.

7 Waterfalls of Quiswarani

The 7 Waterfalls are located near Quiswarani, also written as Quishuarani or Kiswarani. The area is also known locally as Canchispaccha or Qanchis Paccha, meaning “seven waterfalls.”

The walk is not a hard trek. It is a gentle scenic hike with time for photos, rest, and enjoying the mountain setting. The altitude can make the walk feel more demanding, so we keep a steady and comfortable pace.

Weather and best time to travel

This tour crosses different elevations, so weather can change in the same day. Early mornings in Cusco can be cold, the high plateau near Lares can be windy, and Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu are usually warmer and more humid.

April to October usually offers clearer skies and drier conditions. November to March is rainier, but landscapes are greener. Rain protection and warm layers are recommended year-round.

If Machu Picchu weather is important for your planning, you can check the official SENAMHI Machu Picchu forecast.

Machu Picchu tickets and circuits

Your Machu Picchu entrance ticket is included. Circuit 2 is included by default whenever available because it offers one of the most complete experiences inside the citadel. If Circuit 2 is sold out for your date, we will secure the best available alternative, usually Circuit 1 or Circuit 3.

Machu Picchu tickets are limited and assigned by date, time, and circuit. Early booking is strongly recommended, especially in high season. You can read our Machu Picchu Tickets guide or check the official Machu Picchu circuits and routes.

Train travel and luggage

Train travel is included in this tour. On Day 1, you take the Expedition train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. On Day 2, you return by Expedition train to Ollantaytambo and continue by private transportation to Cusco.

Train luggage is limited, so pack light. Bring a small overnight bag or daypack with only what you need for Day 1, the hotel night, and Machu Picchu. Your main suitcase should stay at your hotel in Cusco or in our storage.

Hotel in Aguas Calientes

One night in a comfortable 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes is included. This allows you to rest before your Machu Picchu visit and avoid a very rushed one-day schedule.

Hotel availability depends on your travel date and room type. If you want a hotel upgrade, request it as early as possible so we can check the best options.

ADAL weaving cooperative and local culture

The visit to the ADAL women’s weaving cooperative adds a meaningful cultural stop to the route. You will learn about traditional weaving, natural dyes, and textile knowledge passed down through generations.

Buying directly from local artisans is optional, but it is one of the best ways to support families and help preserve Andean textile traditions. Please ask before taking photos of people and follow your guide’s advice during cultural visits.

You can also read about TreXperience’s work with Lares here: TreXperience and Lares Municipality Agreement.
