The Ministry of Culture is considering great news for all travelers: the possibility of increasing the number of visitors to Machu Picchu, without jeopardizing the conservation of this treasure of the Andean world.
Currently, during the high season (starting June 1), Machu Picchu receives up to 5,600 visitors a day, but it is being evaluated whether this number could be increased. This was confirmed by Fabricio Valencia, Minister of Culture, in a recent interview with TV Peru, the Peruvian state channel.
Thus, a key meeting was held between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) on April 23, to discuss this issue that excites both authorities and travelers.
The minister was clear: if the appropriate measures are implemented, this increase would be possible. Therefore, the aim is to ensure that the experience of visiting Machu Picchu remains unique and safe, without damaging the cultural and natural value of the site.
In addition, the Peruvian government is working to redesign visitation circuits within the sanctuary to optimize the flow of tourists. In one, two, or three months, a proposal is expected to be ready to ensure a balance between tourism and the preservation of Machu Picchu, recognized as a World Heritage Site and one of the seven new wonders of the world.
Tourism is key for Peru. In 2019 alone, 1.2 million travelers came to Machu Picchu, generating an economic impact of 500 million soles. In fact, tourism is the fourth most important economic activity in the country.

Regarding capacity management, the minister explained that Machu Picchu uses a dynamic model, adapting the entrance capacity according to the season. For example, in low season, the capacity is 4,500 people per day.
