Full Itinerary: One Day Inca Trail
Make the most of your time: Inca Trail and Machu Picchu in one day
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco around 4:00 a.m. (time may vary depending on your hotel location). If your hotel is in the Sacred Valley near Ollantaytambo, pickup is usually around 5:30 a.m.. From Cusco, we travel about 1.5 hours to the train station in Ollantaytambo, where you’ll board the Expedition train to Km 104, the starting point of the 1 Day Inca Trail.
Upon arrival at Km 104, you’ll show your original passport and Inca Trail permit at the checkpoint. Then, a fresh picnic breakfast will be waiting for you, prepared by our trekking chefs with coffee, coca tea, and the energy you need to start the hike.
After breakfast, you’ll begin the iconic Inca Trail. First, explore Chachabamba, a beautiful Inca site near the Urubamba River. From there, we start a gradual uphill hike, following ancient stone paths with amazing views of the Andes, cloud forest, waterfalls, orchids, and distant archaeological sites such as Choquesuysuy and Intipata.
After approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking, we reach the spectacular Inca site of Wiñay Wayna. Your guide will lead you through its terraces, ceremonial buildings, water fountains, and stone structures, helping you understand why this is one of the most impressive sites on the Inca Trail.
Near Wiñay Wayna, we’ll stop for a fresh picnic lunch prepared by our expert trekking chefs. This is a perfect moment to rest, enjoy the mountain views, and recharge before the final section of the trail.
After lunch, continue for about 1 hour to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you’ll get your first view of Machu Picchu from above. This is one of the most emotional moments of the day: the trail opens, the mountains appear, and the citadel comes into view just as it did for Inca Trail travelers centuries ago.
From the Sun Gate, we continue down the stone-paved Inca Trail toward the upper part of Machu Picchu. You’ll enter the Circuit 1 area, where the best panoramic viewpoints are located. This route is perfect for classic photos, wide views of the citadel, and a beautiful late-afternoon atmosphere with fewer visitors.
After Machu Picchu, you’ll exit the site and board the bus down to Aguas Calientes. You’ll have some free time for dinner or to explore the local market before boarding the Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo. Our team will meet you there and drive you safely back to your hotel in Cusco. The expected arrival time is around 9:30 p.m..
- Hiking Distance: 13 km / 8 mi
- Hiking Duration: Approximately 6 hours
- Highest Altitude: 2,700 m / 8,858 ft
- Meals: Fresh picnic breakfast and picnic lunch

Important: This tour includes access to Machu Picchu through Circuit 1, focused on the panoramic viewpoints in the upper area. It does not include the center of the citadel, the Temple of the Sun, or the urban sector. If you would like a deeper Machu Picchu visit, we recommend adding one night in Aguas Calientes or booking our Short Inca Trail 2 Days.

One Day Inca Trail - Packing List
During the 1 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, you will leave very early from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley and return in the evening on the same day. If you return to the same hotel, you do not need to check out. If you are changing hotels, you can request luggage storage with TreXperience.
This is a full-day hiking experience with no road access during the trail, so you must carry everything you need in a small, comfortable daypack. Pack light and bring only the essentials for the hike, the weather, and your Machu Picchu visit. For a complete preparation guide, review our Inca Trail packing list.
We recommend bringing a comfortable 25 to 35-liter hiking backpack with side pockets or space for a water bladder. It should be light, practical, and comfortable enough to carry for several hours.
Essentials
These are the most important items to bring for your 1 Day Inca Trail hike. Keep your passport, rain protection, water, sun protection, and personal medication with you at all times.

What to wear?
The weather can change quickly on the Inca Trail. You may experience sun, wind, mist, and rain in the same day, so wear light layers that are easy to add or remove. Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip are essential.

What to put in the Daypack?
Your daypack should stay light and comfortable. Bring only what you need for the hiking day: original passport, water, rain jacket or poncho, sunscreen, snacks, camera or phone, power bank, personal medication, and a warm layer.

What can you rent with TreXperience?
Forgot something? Don’t worry. You can rent selected trekking items from us for an additional cost.

Permits, passports and official Km 104 route
The 1 Day Inca Trail starts at Km 104 (Chachabamba), the official access point for the Short Inca Trail. Entry is controlled by Peruvian authorities and requires an official permit issued with your passport details.
- Your full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, and passport expiration date must be correct.
- Bring your original passport to the Km 104 checkpoint. Photos or copies are not accepted.
- Once permits are issued, changes are very limited and often not possible.
- The Inca Trail usually closes in February for maintenance.
You can review availability and planning details in our Short Inca Trail permits guide. For official route reference, see the official Short Inca Trail / Km 104 route.
About Circuit 1 at Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu uses fixed visitor circuits. This tour includes Circuit 1 or the panoramic route assigned for Inca Trail arrivals, which gives access to the upper terraces and the most important viewpoints.
This circuit is excellent for wide views, classic photos, and the feeling of seeing Machu Picchu from above. However, it does not include the main archaeological core, the Temple of the Sun, or the urban sector.
If you want to explore more of Machu Picchu, the best option is to add one night in Aguas Calientes and visit again the next day with another ticket, subject to availability. You can also review the official Machu Picchu circuits and routes.
Altitude, fitness and health
The 1 Day Inca Trail is a moderate hike. You do not need to be an expert trekker, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on stone steps, uphill sections, and uneven terrain.
- Cusco: 3,399 m / 11,151 ft
- Km 104 / Chachabamba: approximately 2,150 m / 7,054 ft
- Wiñay Wayna: approximately 2,600 m / 8,530 ft
- Sun Gate: approximately 2,700 m / 8,858 ft
- Machu Picchu: approximately 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
We recommend arriving in Cusco or the Sacred Valley at least 1 to 2 days before the hike. Drink water, eat light the night before, avoid heavy alcohol, and consult your doctor if you have heart, lung, pregnancy, diabetes, or other medical concerns. For general guidance, review the CDC travel to high altitudes recommendations.
Weather and what to wear
The Inca Trail passes through cloud forest and mountain terrain, so the weather can change quickly. You may experience sun, wind, mist, and rain on the same day.
- Bring a rain jacket or poncho, even during the dry season.
- Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip.
- Dress in light, breathable layers.
- Bring sun protection: hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
For seasonal details, check our Inca Trail weather guide. For an official forecast, you can also check the official Machu Picchu weather forecast.
Luggage, daypack and porter support
This is a one-day hike, so there are no porters carrying personal items and no camping equipment involved. You will carry a small daypack with everything you need for the day.
- Keep your original passport, water, rain gear, sunscreen, snacks, camera, and personal medication in your daypack.
- If you return to the same hotel in Cusco, you usually do not need to check out.
- If you are changing hotels, you can request luggage storage with TreXperience in advance.
TreXperience is committed to fair treatment of porters, chefs, guides, drivers, and support staff across all our trekking operations. Even when a tour does not require porters, we operate with the same responsible tourism values.
Meals and dietary needs
This premium small-group tour includes fresh picnic meals prepared by our expert trekking chefs. We want your food on the trail to feel thoughtful, energizing, and much better than a basic boxed meal.
- Included: Fresh picnic breakfast and fresh picnic lunch.
- Not included: Dinner after Machu Picchu.
- Vegetarian, vegan, and many dietary needs can be accommodated if you tell us in advance.
- Bring a reusable water bottle. Single-use plastic bottles are not allowed on the Inca Trail.
Aguas Calientes and extra-night options
On the standard 1 Day Inca Trail, you will stop briefly in Aguas Calientes after Machu Picchu before taking the train back to Ollantaytambo and returning to Cusco. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, you can add one night in Aguas Calientes.
- Stay overnight and visit Machu Picchu again the next day with a second ticket.
- Add Circuit 2 or Circuit 3, depending on official availability.
- Add Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain if tickets are available.
- Enjoy a slower evening in Aguas Calientes after the hike.
If you already know you want more time at Machu Picchu, our Short Inca Trail 2 Days is usually the better option.
Responsible travel and protecting Machu Picchu
The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are protected cultural and natural areas. Following the rules helps protect the trail, archaeological sites, wildlife, local communities, and the experience for future travelers.
- Stay on marked paths and follow your guide’s instructions.
- Do not climb, touch, or damage archaeological structures.
- Do not leave trash on the trail or at Machu Picchu.
- Respect local communities, guides, park staff, and other travelers.
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can learn more through the UNESCO Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu page.
Inca Trail 1 Day Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most common questions about the 1 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The goal is simple: help you understand the hike, the permits, the circuit, and what to expect before booking.
Is one day enough to experience the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu?
Yes. This tour is designed for travelers who want the Inca Trail experience in one full day. You hike from Km 104, visit Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, reach Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, and explore the panoramic viewpoints of Circuit 1.
If you want more time inside the archaeological core of Machu Picchu, we recommend adding one night in Aguas Calientes or choosing the 2-day version.
Is this a premium small group tour?
Yes. This is a premium small-group experience with expert local guides, carefully planned logistics, fresh picnic breakfast and lunch, Inca Trail permits, Machu Picchu ticket, trains, bus, and hotel pickup and drop-off.
Small groups allow better pacing, more personal attention, easier communication with your guide, and a more relaxed experience on the trail.
Is TreXperience a local Peruvian operator?
Yes. TreXperience is a 100% Peruvian local tour operator based in Cusco. Your trip is operated by a local team with deep knowledge of the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Andean culture, and real mountain logistics.
Traveling with a local operator also means your trip supports local guides, chefs, drivers, suppliers, and families connected to the region.
Are fresh picnic breakfast and lunch included?
Yes. You will enjoy a fresh picnic breakfast at the trailhead and a fresh picnic lunch near Wiñay Wayna, both prepared by our expert trekking chefs.
This is one of the best parts of the tour. Instead of basic boxed food, you enjoy thoughtfully prepared meals designed to keep you energized during the hike.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be in reasonable physical shape. The trail includes uphill sections, stone steps, and several hours of hiking, but most active travelers can complete it at a steady pace.
You do not need to be an expert hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for 6 to 7 hours with breaks.
What if I have trouble with the altitude?
We recommend spending at least 1 to 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the hike. Stay hydrated, eat light, avoid alcohol before the trek, and walk at a comfortable pace.
The hike starts lower than Cusco, but you still need to be prepared for mountain conditions and a long day of activity.
Can I book the 1 Day Inca Trail last minute?
Last-minute booking is not recommended. Inca Trail permits and Machu Picchu tickets are limited, especially during the high season from April to October.
We recommend booking as early as possible so we can secure your permit, train, ticket, and guide for your preferred date.
Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?
This tour includes Circuit 1 or the panoramic route assigned for Inca Trail arrivals. This route focuses on the upper terraces and the classic viewpoints of Machu Picchu.
It is perfect for photos and wide views, but it does not include the main archaeological core. If you want to visit Circuit 2 or Circuit 3, you will need an additional ticket and usually an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
Not on the standard same-day 1 Day Inca Trail itinerary. There is not enough time to hike the Inca Trail, visit Circuit 1, return to Aguas Calientes, and also hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain on the same day.
If you want to add Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, you need to stay overnight in Aguas Calientes and visit Machu Picchu again the next day, subject to ticket availability.
Do I need to buy Machu Picchu tickets separately?
No. Your tour includes the Inca Trail permit and the Machu Picchu ticket for the route included in the itinerary.
Additional tickets for Circuit 2, Circuit 3, Huayna Picchu Mountain, or Machu Picchu Mountain are not included and must be requested in advance. For official ticket platform reference, you can visit Tu Boleto.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs in most weather conditions. Rain is part of the mountain and cloud forest experience, and the scenery can still be beautiful.
Bring a rain jacket or poncho, a rain cover for your backpack, and hiking shoes with good grip, especially during the rainy season.
Can children join?
Older children who enjoy hiking and are comfortable with altitude usually do well. The hike is moderate, but it is a long day with early pickup, several hours of walking, and a late return to Cusco.
Contact us before booking if you are traveling with children, so we can help you choose the best option for your family.
Do porters carry personal items on this tour?
No. This is a one-day hike, so porters are not included to carry personal items. You will carry a small daypack with your essentials for the day.
TreXperience is committed to fair treatment of porters and support staff across our trekking operations. Even when a tour does not require porters, we keep the same responsible tourism standards.
Should I bring extra cash?
Yes. Bring some Peruvian soles for snacks, drinks, tips, bathrooms, or small purchases in Aguas Calientes or along the way.
Can I upgrade to the 2-day Short Inca Trail?
Yes. If you want more time, a hotel night in Aguas Calientes, a second Machu Picchu visit, and a less rushed experience, we recommend upgrading to the Short Inca Trail 2 Days.
