The works, led by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, included the removal of rocks, fallen trees, and debris, as well as the installation of wooden railings and retaining walls that will reinforce the safety of this section of the Inca Trail.

Routes 1, 2, and 3, which lead directly to the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, were especially reinforced.

The task was not easy; the steep terrain required 12 specialists, in charge of the task, to use vertical progression techniques with ropes, harnesses, and carabiners to reach the most complicated areas of the section affected by the rains.

In addition, at the Wiñaywayna control point, improvements were made to the toilets, drains, and water evacuation systems, according to Francisco Huarcaya, the archaeologist leading the preservation work on this historic Inca trail hike.

The Inca Trail Network Team is always on the alert

For his part, Jorge Moya Cohaguila, director of Culture of Cusco, said that both the team of the Inca Trail Network and the staff of the citadel of Machu Picchu remain on alert for any climatic eventuality. “We trust that the recent rains will not cause new emergencies,” he said.

In this sense, the Inca Trail Network team remains on alert for any possible climate change, but for now... everything is ready to relive this legendary trek!
