Peru soared to second place worldwide in the 2025 Global Big Day after bird-lovers logged an impressive 1,399 species in just 24 hours on 10 May, coinciding with the event’s tenth birthday and World Migratory Bird Day. Across every corner of Peru, 1,027 participants, from seasoned scientists to first-time travelers, uploaded 4,530 checklists to eBird, exploring habitats that stretch from Amazon rainforests and snowy Andean ridges to coastal wetlands and lively city parks.

This nationwide effort, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism together with PromPerú, Sernanp, Serfor, Corbidi and many local partners, proves how community science and travel can work hand in hand. Each pair of binoculars not only enriched conservation data but also powered sustainable tourism in remote communities. With some of the planet’s widest biodiversity, Peru invites visitors to pack a field guide, lace up their hiking boots, and feel the thrill of spotting iconic species, while helping protect the landscapes those birds call home.

More than 1,399 Peruvian birds

With coasts, mountain ranges, and jungle in the same country, Peru brings together marine-coastal wetlands, Andean deserts, Amazonian forests, and high altitude páramos that generate an astonishing range of microclimates. This mosaic of habitats, together with its position on migratory routes, provides food and shelter for more than 1,800 species, nearly one-fifth of all birds on the planet.

The extensive network of protected areas and the joint work of scientists, communities, and travelers who record sightings further consolidate this leadership. Each trip with binoculars offers the possibility of finding species impossible to see in any other corner of the planet.
