After being closed throughout February for maintenance, the legendary Inca Trail will be open again as of Tuesday, April 1.

Thanks to a coordinated effort between the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian State (SERNANP), the Regional Management of Foreign Trade, Tourism and Handicrafts (GERCETUR) and the participation of the Municipality of Machu Picchu and the private sector, the most affected areas of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu by heavy rains were rehabilitated, carrying out maintenance work.

In this way, the amazing Inca Trail is once again available to the thousands of visitors who travel it every year. However, there are some important measures to take care of your safety, which we will tell you about below.

Restrictions Inca Trail 2025

These measures will be lifted little by little until the Inca Trail is operating normally again. That is, very soon!

  1. If your adventure begins on the routes that start from Piscacucho (km 82), Qoriwayrachina (km 88), or Salkantay, take into account these recommendations:
  • In some sections, such as between Tarayoc and Hatunchaca or after the “50 steps” sector, it is recommended to walk without stopping too much to avoid affecting the terrain. This depends on the weather.
  • About 1 km after Wayllabamba camp, there is a 300-meter detour on the upper part of the original trail, which should be used.
  • Due to landslides in the area called “Caracol”, from Phuyupatamarka, the old trail that passes through Qantupata, Torrepata, Intipata, and Wiñaywayna will be used.
  • The Wiñaywayna camp is temporarily closed for overnight, it will only be a waypoint.
  • The groups that had planned to sleep the third night in Wayllabamba - Pacaymayo or Wiñaywayna will be relocated to Phuyupatamarka. This information will be confirmed in Piscacucho, the start of the Inca Trail.
  • Groups with campsites in Ayapata and Chaquiqocha should continue directly to Machu Picchu as the Wiñayhuayna campsite is closed.
  1. Travelers starting Route 05 from km 104 (Chachabamba) should take a recently opened alternative road leading to the Choquesuysuy sector, as the direct section to Wiñaywayna is temporarily closed. From Choquesuysuy, the route continues with a climb to Wiñaywayna and then to Intipunku. It is recommended to advance continuously in areas with unstable terrain, especially if the weather is not favorable.
  2. The Inca Trail Network is still undergoing rehabilitation and conservation. In addition, continuous maintenance will be carried out on the Phuyupatamarka - Qantupata - Intipata route to ensure that the road remains in good condition for all travelers.
