The head of the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, archaeologist Nino del Solar, explained that both mountains were affected at the initial sections of their trails due to the rainy season that occurs in Cusco every year, from early December to the end of March. As a result, there were landslides and mudflows along about 15 linear meters of the ascent to the Huayna Picchu mountain and the first 8 meters of the Machu Picchu Mountain path.

Thanks to the technical efforts of the Ministry of Culture, the institution in charge of the park and its mountains, maintenance was carried out in the affected areas. The archaeologist confirmed that the Huayna Picchu hikes will be operational starting April 11, and those eager to climb Machu Picchu Mountain will be able to do so starting April 26.

But don't worry; the Ministry of Culture will continue with ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and safety checks in these zones to make sure every visitor can enjoy the experience safely.

How high are the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains?

Huayna Picchu Mountain, also known as Wayna Picchu, is the peak that always appears in the background of classic Machu Picchu postcards. It rises to 2,693 meters (8,835 feet). On the other hand, Machu Picchu Mountain (which bears the same name as the citadel) reaches 3,061 meters, and its ascent doesn't require as much effort as Huayna Picchu and its Stairs of Death. However, both require a special ticket, and since they sell out quickly, it's best to purchase them in advance.
