The "White City" was founded on August 15, 1540, initially named “Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunta.” With its extensive colonial architecture and natural landscapes, it has earned worldwide recognition.

In 2001, its Historic Center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 2020, it was named a Creative City of Gastronomy.

Among its popular tourist attractions are the Colca Canyon, the Sumbay rock art caves, and the Yura hot springs. Its signature dishes, such as rocoto relleno, chupe de camarones, and cuy chactado, never fail to impress visitors.

For its 484th anniversary celebrations, the city has highlighted August 14 and 15. The festivities began on Wednesday with the raising of the National Flag and the Arequipa flag, a mass at the Cathedral Basilica, and a formal session.
