Cusco celebrates, 18 years ago, Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world

On July 7, 2007, Machu Picchu earned its place among the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World. This global recognition was made possible through the online votes of millions of Peruvians and people from all over the globe, in a contest organized by the New7Wonders Foundation. This Monday, July 7, Cusco celebrates the 18th anniversary of this historic milestone.

The announcement took place in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, in a packed stadium and was broadcast worldwide. During the event, the winners of the campaign were officially revealed. With over 100 million online votes, it marked the first and, at the time, the largest global voting campaign aimed at highlighting iconic sites across the planet.

Machu Picchu was selected alongside six other world-famous landmarks: the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India, Petra in Jordan, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the Roman Colosseum in Italy, and the pyramid of Chichén Itzá in Mexico.

Jean Paul de la Fuente, director of the New7Wonders Foundation, commented on the 17th anniversary of the announcement by highlighting the concept of the “Wonder Effect”. He described it as a result of dynamic and well-planned promotional strategies that have led to greater social and economic impact than most traditional efforts.

The importance of Machu Picchu as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World

Being chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders has elevated Machu Picchu's visibility as a top Peru attraction. Over the past 18 years, it has become one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, annual tourist numbers had already exceeded one million in the Inca citadel. Since the reopening of global travel, the number of visitors has steadily increased. By 2024, visitor counts will have returned to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 1.5 million and growing.

This recognition, together with Machu Picchu’s inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983, has played a crucial role in enhancing its global reputation. Today, the Inca citadel continues to be a must-see destination, admired for its historical significance, engineering marvels, and cultural legacy. Its continued appeal reflects the powerful role that international honors and local efforts play in preserving and sharing the beauty of Peru’s heritage with the world.
