Ollantaytambo shines as one of Peru’s must-visit destinations for travelers in 2025

Ollantaytambo has just earned one of the highest recognitions in Peru’s tourism industry. After more than ten years, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) officially granted this ancient town in Cusco the prestigious Hierarchy 4 status through Ministerial Resolution No. 027-2025-MINCETUR/VMT. This puts Ollantaytambo, Peru, alongside Machu Picchu, which was the first site to receive the distinction back in 2011.

Hierarchy 4 is the top category for Peruvian destinations with outstanding potential to attract international visitors consistently, contribute to regional development, and support local economies. According to Mincetur, this award will enhance Ollantaytambo’s reputation and draw more investment into tourism infrastructure, all while promoting sustainable growth and protecting cultural heritage.

The proposal was developed by the Regional Government of Cusco, through Gercetur, and evaluated based on strict criteria, including accessibility, service quality, environmental responsibility, and community engagement. The Ollantaytambo ruins, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, its historical significance, and breathtaking scenery were central to the decision.

A great responsibility for the authorities of Ollantaytambo

With the town sitting at an impressive Ollantaytambo altitude of approximately 2,792 meters (9,160 feet), the recognition celebrates both its geographical and cultural importance. Authorities expect it to lead to new jobs and economic opportunities in tourism, food services, and lodging.

However, it also brings greater responsibility: preserving Ollantaytambo’s archaeological and natural surroundings, improving waste management, and ensuring that service providers are well-trained. This moment marks a major step forward in reinforcing the value and future of Ollantaytambo Peru as a sustainable travel destination.
