The Inca Trail 2 Days to Machu Picchu with Camping - Travel Information

This section is your “before you go” guide for the 2 Day Inca Trail with Camping. It covers the practical details you need for the Km 104 route, the camping experience, Machu Picchu entry, weather, safety, and responsible travel.

Permits, passports & confirmation

The Short Inca Trail is regulated by the Peruvian authorities, and access is only possible with an official permit issued under your personal details. This is why booking with the correct passport information is very important.

  • Your passport details must match exactly: full name, passport number, nationality, and date of birth.
  • Bring your original passport on the hike. Photos or copies are not accepted at the checkpoint.
  • Once permits and tickets are issued, changes are very limited. If you renew your passport, tell us right away.
  • The Inca Trail is usually closed in February for maintenance, and dates can vary.

You can review planning details in our Short Inca Trail permits guide. For official route reference, see the official Short Inca Trail / Km 104 route.

Location

The Inca Trail circuit starts at Km 104 - Chachabamba, on the left bank of the Urubamba River, inside the Machu Picchu District in the Province of Urubamba. The route takes you through cloud forest landscapes, ancient Inca sites, waterfalls, stone steps, and mountain views before reaching the Sun Gate (Intipunku) and Machu Picchu.

The campsite is located near Puente Ruinas, close to the Urubamba River and below the mountains surrounding Machu Picchu. It is a peaceful place to enjoy the camping experience after a full day on the trail.

History

The Inca Trail was part of a vast road system used by the Incas to connect sacred sites, agricultural zones, villages, and administrative centers across the empire. This section connects Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna, the Sun Gate, and Machu Picchu, making it one of the most meaningful short hikes in Peru.

Today, the Peruvian government protects the trail by limiting daily access and requiring travelers to enter with a licensed tour operator and authorized guide. This helps protect the archaeological sites, the natural environment, and the experience for future travelers.

Weather

The weather on the Inca Trail can change quickly. You may experience sun, mist, clouds, and rain on the same day, especially because this route passes through the cloud forest. The best approach is to dress in layers and always carry rain protection.

The dry season usually runs from April to October, while the rainy season runs from November to March. Rainy season can be greener and quieter, but you need waterproof gear and good hiking shoes. For more details, check our Inca Trail weather guide.

Altitude, fitness & health

The 2 Day Inca Trail Hike with Camping is a moderate trek. You don’t need to be an expert hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for 6–7 hours on stone steps, uphill sections, and uneven terrain.

  • Cusco: 3,399 m / 11,151 ft
  • Km 104 (Chachabamba): approximately 2,150 m / 7,054 ft
  • Wiñay Wayna: 2,600 m / 8,530 ft
  • Highest point (Sun Gate / Intipunku): 2,700 m / 8,858 ft
  • Machu Picchu: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
  • Campsite: approximately 2,000 m / 6,562 ft

We recommend arriving in Cusco or the Sacred Valley at least 2 days before the hike to acclimatize. Drink water, avoid heavy alcohol before the trek, and consult your doctor if you have heart, lung, pregnancy, diabetes, or other medical concerns. For general guidance, review the CDC travel to high altitudes recommendations.

Hiking distance

The Inca Trail short trek begins at Km 104 and passes through Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna before reaching the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu. The hiking distance on this camping version is approximately 10 km / 6.2 miles, usually completed in about 6–7 hours.

The hike is shorter than the Classic Inca Trail but still rewarding. You’ll walk on original Inca stone paths, climb ancient stairs, and enjoy panoramic views before reaching Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.

Camping experience, porters & support team

This tour includes a real camping experience near the Urubamba River. Your tents, dining setup, and camping gear are arranged by our team, so you can enjoy the adventure without worrying about the logistics.

  • Quality sleeping tents are included.
  • A dining tent with tables and chairs is included.
  • You receive a duffle bag for up to 5 kg / 11 lb, which goes to the campsite.
  • Porters support the camping logistics and equipment, depending on the group size.

TreXperience is committed to fair treatment of porters, chefs, guides, drivers, and support staff. We believe a great Inca Trail experience must also respect the people who make it possible.

Meals, water & dietary needs

One of the best parts of this premium small-group tour is the food. Your fresh picnic breakfast and lunch are prepared by our expert trekking chefs, and dinner is served at the campsite after your first visit to Machu Picchu.

  • Day 1: Fresh picnic breakfast, picnic lunch, snacks, and dinner at the campsite.
  • Day 2: Breakfast at the campsite. Lunch after Machu Picchu is not included.
  • We can accommodate vegetarian and many dietary needs when you tell us in advance.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Single-use plastic bottles are not allowed on the Inca Trail.

Our food is designed to give you energy, comfort, and a better trekking experience without feeling like you are eating basic boxed meals.

Machu Picchu circuits & optional hikes

Machu Picchu uses timed entries and fixed visitor circuits. Your route inside the citadel depends on ticket availability and current regulations, and we guide you through the circuits included with your Inca Trail tickets.

  • Day 1: After hiking through the Sun Gate, you’ll visit the main viewpoint area through Circuit 1, ideal for panoramic photos and afternoon light.
  • Day 2: You return for your main guided visit through Circuit 3, where you explore temples, plazas, water fountains, and sacred spaces.

Optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets and must be booked in advance. You can also review the official Machu Picchu circuits and routes.

Inca sites and places to visit

This tour includes some of the most beautiful and meaningful places on the Short Inca Trail:

  • Chachabamba: The first archaeological site after the Km 104 checkpoint, with ceremonial structures connected to water and purification.
  • Wiñay Wayna: One of the most impressive Inca sites on the route, with farming terraces, ceremonial fountains, and beautiful mountain views.
  • Sun Gate (Intipunku): The famous entrance to Machu Picchu used by Inca Trail hikers, offering your first unforgettable view of the citadel.
  • Machu Picchu: The Lost City of the Incas and the highlight of the journey, visited twice during this tour.
  • Puente Ruinas campsite: Your overnight camping location near the Urubamba River, below the mountains around Machu Picchu.
Flora and fauna

The Short Inca Trail passes through a beautiful cloud forest with orchids, bromeliads, ferns, wildflowers, butterflies, and many birds. The scenery changes quickly as you move from river valley to mountain trail and finally toward the Sun Gate.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but travelers may see hummingbirds, butterflies, lizards, and many types of birds along the route. The area is part of the protected natural environment around Machu Picchu, so always keep your distance from wildlife and stay on the trail.

Best time to hike

The best time to hike the 2 Day Inca Trail with Camping is usually from April to October, during the dry season, when the chance of rain is lower and views are often clearer.

From November to March, the trail is greener and less crowded, but rain is more common. If you travel during these months, bring waterproof clothing, a rain cover for your backpack, and good hiking shoes with grip.

Inca Trail Short Trek regulations

The Peruvian government manages access to the Inca Trail to protect the archaeological sites and the natural environment. Here are the most important rules:

  • Checkpoints: You must pass official checkpoints at Km 104, Wiñay Wayna, and Machu Picchu.
  • Permits: You need an Inca Trail permit booked through an authorized tour operator.
  • Closing period: The Inca Trail usually closes in February for maintenance.
  • Tour guides: Guides must be licensed and trained for Inca Trail operations.
  • Waste management: All trash must be carried out. Nothing should be left on the trail.
  • Plastic bottles: Single-use plastic bottles are not allowed. Bring a reusable bottle.
  • Cancellation policy: Inca Trail permits are nonrefundable and nontransferable once issued.
Safety and security

The Short Inca Trail is beautiful, but it is still a mountain route with stone steps, uneven terrain, changing weather, and limited access to medical services. Our team works to keep the experience safe, organized, and enjoyable.

  • Experienced guides: Our guides are trained, licensed, and experienced on the Inca Trail.
  • Safety gear: We provide a first-aid kit, oxygen tank, and communication equipment.
  • Briefing before the hike: You’ll receive a full explanation of what to expect, what to pack, and how the two days work.
  • Small groups: Small groups allow better pacing, closer attention, and a more personal experience.
  • Steady pace: We hike at a comfortable rhythm with time for photos, breaks, and explanations.
Code of conduct

The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are protected cultural and natural areas. Please help us protect them by following these simple rules:

  • Stay on marked paths and follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Do not leave trash on the trail or at the campsite.
  • Do not climb, touch, or damage archaeological structures.
  • Respect other hikers, local communities, porters, guides, and park staff.
  • Respect wildlife and keep a safe distance from animals.
  • Support responsible and sustainable travel practices.

Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can learn more through the UNESCO Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu page.

Prohibited items

Some items are not allowed on the Inca Trail or inside Machu Picchu to protect visitors, wildlife, and archaeological sites:

  • Animals, except authorized guide dogs.
  • Alcohol and illegal drugs.
  • Weapons or dangerous objects.
  • Explosive or flammable materials.

The 2 Day Inca Trail with Camping follows the final section of the Classic Inca Trail, starting at Km 104 and arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. The main difference from the hotel version is that you spend the night camping near the Urubamba River, with tents, meals, chef support, and porter logistics included.

It is ideal for travelers who want the Short Inca Trail experience but prefer a more adventurous night in nature instead of staying in a hotel.

Where is the 2-Day Inca Trail campsite located?

The campsite is located at Puente Ruinas, near the Urubamba River and below the mountains surrounding Machu Picchu. It is a peaceful place to rest after hiking the Inca Trail and visiting Machu Picchu for the first time.

What kind of camping equipment is included?

TreXperience provides the essential camping equipment for a comfortable night near Machu Picchu. This includes:

  • Comfortable sleeping tents
  • Sponge mattress
  • Dining tent and kitchen setup
  • Tables and chairs

Sleeping bags, trekking poles, and inflatable mattresses are not included by default, but they are available for rent.

Is this a premium small group tour?

Yes. This tour is designed as a premium small-group camping experience, with professional guides, fresh picnic meals, expert trekking chefs, porter support, quality camping gear, and a comfortable Vistadome train return.

Small groups create a better experience on the trail: better pacing, more personal attention, easier communication with your guide, and a more relaxed visit to Machu Picchu.

Are fresh picnic breakfast and lunch included?

Yes. On Day 1, you’ll enjoy a fresh picnic breakfast at the trailhead and a fresh picnic lunch along the route, both prepared by our expert trekking chefs.

This is one of the best parts of the experience: you don’t just receive basic boxed food. You enjoy thoughtfully prepared meals designed to keep you energized and comfortable on the trail.

Is there hiking staff like porters, chefs, and a guide?

Yes. During this trek, you will have a professional local team supporting the operation:

  • 1 professional tour guide for groups of up to 8 participants
  • Expert trekking chef and kitchen support
  • Porters for camping equipment and logistics, depending on the number of travelers

TreXperience is committed to fair treatment of porters and support staff, including respectful working conditions, proper logistics, and responsible tourism practices.

Is TreXperience a local Peruvian operator?

Yes. TreXperience is a 100% Peruvian local tour operator based in Cusco. Your trip is operated by a local team with deep knowledge of the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Andean culture, and real mountain logistics.

Traveling with a local operator also means your trip directly supports local guides, chefs, porters, drivers, suppliers, and families connected to the region.

How long is the 2 Day Inca Trail Hike?

The hiking section is approximately 10 km / 6.2 miles. You will hike for around 6 to 7 hours on Day 1 before reaching Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.

The route is considered moderate because it includes stone steps, uphill sections, and uneven terrain, but the pace is steady and guided.

Do we visit Machu Picchu twice?

Yes. You visit Machu Picchu on both days.

  • Day 1: You arrive through the Sun Gate and enjoy your first visit through Circuit 1, usually with fewer crowds and beautiful afternoon light.
  • Day 2: You return for your main guided tour through Circuit 3, exploring temples, plazas, terraces, and sacred areas.

This combination gives you one of the most complete Machu Picchu experiences available in just two days.

Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?

Yes. If you want an extra challenge and panoramic views, you can add Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain. These tickets are limited and must be booked in advance with your reservation.

  • You can only hike one: Huayna Picchu OR Machu Picchu Mountain.
  • The hike adds about 2–3 extra hours to your Day 2 schedule.
  • These hikes are steeper and more demanding than the guided citadel visit.

Tell us early, and we’ll check availability for your travel date.

Do I need to buy Machu Picchu tickets separately?

No. Your tour includes the entry tickets needed for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu according to the itinerary and official availability.

If you want to understand how the ticket system works, you can review the official online platform Tu Boleto. Optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain require additional tickets.

When is the best time of year to hike this route?

The best time to take this tour is usually during the dry season, from April to October, when rainfall is lower and views are often clearer.

The rainy season, from November to March, can still be beautiful because the trail is greener and there are fewer travelers. You just need good rain gear, waterproof protection, and proper hiking shoes.

When does the Inca Trail close?

The Inca Trail usually closes every February for maintenance and because of the heavy rainy season. If you plan to travel around February, contact us before booking so we can confirm the best available option.

Can you pick me up from the Sacred Valley instead of Cusco?

Yes. You can stay either in Cusco or near Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. Staying near Ollantaytambo can make the morning easier because it is closer to the train station.

  • If you stay in Cusco: pickup is usually around 4:00 a.m.
  • If you stay near Ollantaytambo: pickup is usually around 5:30 a.m., depending on your hotel and train schedule.

Send us your hotel name and address, and we’ll confirm the best pickup plan for your exact date.

What time do we get back to Cusco on Day 2?

On the last day, you return on the Vistadome train to Ollantaytambo and then continue by private transfer to Cusco.

We usually arrive in Cusco at around 7:30 p.m., depending on the final train schedule and traffic. If you are planning a flight or bus trip out of Cusco, we strongly recommend booking it for the next day.

Do I need trekking poles, and are they allowed?

Trekking poles are optional, but they are helpful if you have sensitive knees or want extra stability on stone steps and downhill sections.

Poles are allowed on the Inca Trail as long as they have rubber tips to protect the trail. You can rent them from TreXperience at an extra cost.

Are there bathrooms on the trail and at the campsite?

Bathrooms are limited and basic on the trail. You’ll find facilities at key points such as Km 104 and near Wiñay Wayna. At the campsite, facilities are simple but available.

Bring toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a few coins in soles, as some facilities may charge a small fee.

Can I upgrade this tour to a more comfortable version?

Yes. This page is for the camping version. If you prefer a more exclusive and comfortable experience with upgraded hotels and premium logistics, see our Luxury Short Inca Trail.

How do I book the Inca Trail with Camping?

Booking is simple. Click the BOOK NOW button, choose your departure date, fill out the form with your personal and passport information, and submit your deposit to request your Inca Trail permit.

Because Inca Trail permits are regulated by the Peruvian authorities, all bookings must be manually verified. Once your permit is confirmed, we’ll send your confirmation details and help you prepare for the trek.

Can I do this hike without a tour operator?

No. You cannot access the Inca Trail independently. You must enter with a licensed tour operator and an authorized guide. TreXperience handles the permits, tickets, guide, transportation, camping logistics, meals, and support team so you can focus on enjoying the experience.
