Along the way, you’ll see Patallacta, one of the first major archaeological sites on the route. This first hiking day helps you settle into the trail rhythm before reaching your campsite in Ayapata.

At camp, your trekking team will be waiting with warm drinks, fresh food, and your first night under the Andean sky.

This is the most demanding day of the Classic Inca Trail, and also one of the most rewarding. You’ll climb steadily toward Dead Woman’s Pass, known locally as Warmiwañusca, the highest point of the entire trek.

Reaching the pass is a real achievement. From the top, take a moment to breathe, look back at the trail, and enjoy the feeling of standing high in the Andes. After the descent, the route continues through dramatic mountain landscapes toward your campsite at Chaquicocha.

By the end of the day, you’ll feel tired, proud, and fully connected to the trail.

  • Distance: 16 km / 10 mi

You’ll visit places like Phuyupatamarca, known as the “Town Above the Clouds,” and continue toward Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the Classic Inca Trail.

This is your last night on the trail. The atmosphere at camp feels special because everyone knows Machu Picchu is close.

  • Distance: 10 km / 6 mi
  • Campsite altitude: 2,600 m / 8,530 ft
  • Accommodation: Camping in Wiñay Wayna
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and tea time

Day 7: Inca Trail Day 4 - Sun Gate, Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

You wake up early for the moment every Inca Trail traveler dreams about. After the final section of the trail, you reach Intipunku, the Sun Gate, where Machu Picchu appears below you for the first time.

After taking in the view, continue down to the citadel for your guided Machu Picchu tour. Your guide will bring the site to life with its history, design, sacred spaces, and the story of how it connects with the trail you just completed.

Later, you’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, board the panoramic train to Ollantaytambo, and continue by private transport back to Cusco for a comfortable hotel night.

  • Distance: 6 km / 3.7 mi

Day 8: Fly Cusco to Puerto Maldonado + Amazon Lodge Welcome

Fly from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, known as the Capital of Biodiversity. The domestic flight is not included. Upon arrival, the lodge team will welcome you and take you to the river for a 25-minute boat ride along the clay-colored Madre de Dios River.

Arrive at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, set within a private eco-reserve surrounded by rainforest. After settling into your room or stilted wooden cabaña, enjoy lunch at the palm-thatched Casa Grande dining room.

In the afternoon, take your first guided walk along the Concepción Trails, a beautiful introduction to the Amazon’s plants, sounds, and wildlife. At dusk, enjoy a Twilight River cruise as the rainforest shifts from day to night. Watch for birds, listen for new sounds, and see if you can spot caimans along the riverbanks.

In the evening, enjoy dinner inspired by local Amazon ingredients, then return to your room and fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest.

  • Included: Puerto Maldonado airport pickup, lodge transfer by land and river, guided Concepción Trails walk, Twilight River cruise
  • Accommodation: Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción
  • Meals: Lunch + dinner
  • Difficulty: Easy

Day 9: Lake Sandoval + Canopy Walkway + Rainforest by Night

If you want to make the most of the Amazon morning, start early with breakfast before visiting Lake Sandoval, a glassy oxbow lake inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve. You’ll walk through the rainforest, then board a wooden canoe to glide quietly across the water.

Lake Sandoval is one of the best places in the area to look for wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, black caimans, side-neck turtles, and, with luck, the endangered giant river otter.

After lunch at the lodge, climb the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a safe network of hanging bridges and treetop platforms above the forest floor. From up there, you’ll feel the true size of the rainforest and may spot toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, or sloths.

After dinner, join a guided Rainforest by Night experience. With flashlights and a naturalist guide, the jungle feels completely different as nocturnal species begin to move through the forest.

  • Included: Lake Sandoval excursion, Canopy Walkway, Rainforest by Night
  • Accommodation: Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción
  • Meals: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Day 10: Bio-orchard + Palmetum + Lagoon Paddling + Inland Collpa

After breakfast, discover the rainforest from a different angle with a visit to the lodge’s organic bio-orchard. Your guide will explain tropical plants and how local communities use some of them in daily life and traditional practices.

Later, continue to the Palmetum, a 30-hectare area dedicated to Amazonian palms, restoration, and conservation. It is a calm and interesting way to understand how rich and useful the rainforest can be.

After lunch, enjoy a relaxing paddle boat ride on the lodge’s oxbow-shaped lagoon. As you move across the water, watch for hoatzins, flycatchers, woodrails, and listen for the deep calls of howler monkeys in the distance. You may also see the remains of an old semi-submerged steamboat in waters where caimans and piranhas live.

If you like, you can try catch-and-release fishing using a simple wooden rod, a traditional local style. In the evening, visit the Inland Collpa, where different animals may come to the clay lick in search of salt and minerals.

  • Included: Bio-orchard, Palmetum, lagoon paddling, catch-and-release fishing, Inland Collpa
  • Accommodation: Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción
  • Meals: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
  • Difficulty: Easy

Day 11: Return to Puerto Maldonado Airport

Enjoy your last morning in the Amazon as the rainforest wakes around you. Listen for parakeets in the trees, monkeys moving through the canopy, and the final sounds of the jungle before your journey ends.

Breakfast is served at Casa Grande, and check-out is usually around 10:00 a.m. Depending on your flight time, lunch can be arranged at an additional cost.

When it is time to leave, board the motorized wooden boat for the 25-minute ride back along the Madre de Dios River, then continue to Puerto Maldonado Airport for your departure flight. Your onward flight is not included.

  • Included: Lodge transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Difficulty: Easy

Note: Amazon activities and excursions may vary depending on weather, river level, wildlife movement, lodge schedules, and local conditions at the time of your visit.

Peru Highlights with Classic Inca Trail and Amazon 11 Days - Travel Information

Lima arrival: why an early arrival works best

This tour starts with an early arrival in Lima so you can settle in and enjoy the Traditional Lima City Tour in the afternoon. If your hotel room is not ready when you arrive, you can usually leave your luggage at the hotel and freshen up before the tour. Early check-in is not included unless confirmed separately, so keep essentials like a change of clothes, medication, documents, and chargers in your carry-on.

What you will see on the Lima City Tour

Your Lima tour focuses on the city’s strongest contrasts: colonial Lima, modern Lima, the San Francisco Catacombs, and the Miraflores boardwalk overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is a relaxed first introduction to Peru before flying to Cusco and starting the mountain part of the journey. The Larco Museum is not included in this updated itinerary.

Domestic flights: what you need to book

Domestic flights are not included. You will need flights from Lima to Cusco, Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, and your onward flight from Puerto Maldonado. Before booking flights, send us your preferred options so we can confirm the timing works with airport transfers, the Cusco City Tour, and the Amazon lodge boat transfer.

Cusco altitude: your first day in the Andes

Cusco is high, so Day 2 is planned at an easy pace. Drink water, eat light, avoid alcohol, and walk slowly when you arrive. The afternoon city tour is a good way to begin acclimatizing because it gives you culture and history without making the day too physically demanding.

Why the Sacred Valley helps before the Inca Trail

The Sacred Valley day is not only beautiful; it also helps the trip flow better. You visit Pisac, Moray, Maras Salt Mines, and Ollantaytambo, then sleep in Ollantaytambo instead of returning to Cusco. This places you closer to the Classic Inca Trail starting point and makes the first trekking morning smoother.

Classic Inca Trail permits and passport details

Classic Inca Trail permits are limited and date-specific. Your permit is issued with your passport information, so your full name, passport number, date of birth, nationality, and passport expiration date must be correct. You must carry your original passport on the trek. If you renew your passport after booking, tell us as soon as possible so we can advise you.

Inca Trail difficulty: what to expect

The Classic Inca Trail is a real multi-day trek, not a simple walk. The most challenging day is the climb to Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,214 m / 13,829 ft. You do not need technical climbing skills, but you should be comfortable with long hiking days, stone steps, uneven trails, and high altitude. Training with stairs and long walks before the trip helps a lot.

Porters, duffel bag, and what you carry each day

During the trek, porters carry group equipment and your personal duffel allowance according to the tour conditions. You only hike with a daypack carrying water, rain gear, snacks, sunscreen, layers, camera, and personal items. Pack light and keep your daypack comfortable, because you will carry it every trekking day.

Machu Picchu entry, circuits, and optional hikes

Machu Picchu visits are controlled by official circuits and time slots. After completing the Classic Inca Trail, your guide will lead the visit according to the ticket and route confirmed for your date. Optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets and must be requested early because availability is limited.

Return train after Machu Picchu

After your Machu Picchu visit, you return by bus to Aguas Calientes, then by panoramic train to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transport to Cusco. Keep a small set of clean clothes and personal items ready for the post-trek hotel night in Cusco. Large luggage should stay stored safely before the trek whenever possible.

Amazon lodge experience in Tambopata

The Amazon section is a complete change of scenery after the Andes. From Puerto Maldonado, you travel by land and river to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción. The lodge experience includes rainforest trails, river activities, naturalist-guided excursions, full board at the lodge, and time to enjoy the sounds and slower rhythm of the rainforest.

Amazon weather, mosquitoes, and activity changes

Tambopata is warm, humid, and tropical. Bring light long-sleeve clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, breathable pants, and shoes that can handle muddy trails. Amazon activities may change depending on weather, river levels, wildlife movement, and lodge schedules. Your naturalist guide will choose the best available plan for safety and a good rainforest experience.

Are domestic flights included?

No. Domestic flights are not included. You need to book Lima to Cusco, Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, and your onward flight from Puerto Maldonado. We can advise the best flight times so the transfers, tours, and Amazon lodge schedule work smoothly.

What flight time should I choose from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado?

Choose a flight that allows enough time for airport check-in, arrival in Puerto Maldonado, and the lodge transfer by land and river. Before booking, send us your preferred flight option so we can confirm whether it fits the Amazon lodge arrival schedule and first-day activities.

Do I need to book the Inca Trail far in advance?

Yes. Classic Inca Trail permits are limited and tied to specific dates. The earlier you book, the better your chance of getting your preferred start date, especially in high season. Permits cannot be properly secured without correct traveler details and deposit.

What information do you need to book my Inca Trail permit?

We need your full name exactly as shown on your passport, passport number, date of birth, passport expiration date, and nationality. Do not use nicknames or shortened names. Your permit and entry documents must match your passport.

Do I need trekking experience for the Classic Inca Trail?

You do not need technical trekking experience, but you should have a reasonable fitness level. You will hike for several days on stone paths, stairs, uphill sections, and high-altitude terrain. Training with stairs, hills, and long walks before the trip will make the trek much more enjoyable.

What is the hardest day of the Classic Inca Trail?

The hardest day is usually Inca Trail Day 2, when you cross Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,214 m / 13,829 ft. It is challenging because of the altitude and the long climb, but your guide will set a steady pace and give you time to rest.

Do porters carry my luggage on the Inca Trail?

What meals are included on the tour?

Meals vary by section. City days include the meals listed in the itinerary. The Classic Inca Trail includes freshly prepared trek meals. The Amazon lodge section includes meals according to the lodge program, usually from lunch on arrival day to breakfast on departure day. Any meal not listed is not included.

Can you handle vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-friendly meals?

Yes, most dietary needs can be arranged with advance notice. Please tell us when booking, especially for the Inca Trail and Amazon lodge meals, so the team can prepare properly. For serious allergies, share clear details before the trip.

Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?

Yes, if permits are available and the timing works with your Inca Trail itinerary. These optional hikes require separate tickets and sell out early, so request them when you book, not at the last minute.

Can I add a free day in Cusco, Rainbow Mountain, or extra Amazon nights?

Yes. You can add a free day in Cusco for better acclimatization, Rainbow Mountain as an extra high-Andes adventure, or extra nights in the Amazon for a slower rainforest experience. These add-ons should be requested before confirming your final itinerary.

Will I definitely see wildlife in the Amazon?

Wildlife sightings are common, but nature is never guaranteed. Your naturalist guide will choose good areas and times based on conditions, but animals move freely. The best approach is to stay quiet, be patient, and enjoy the full rainforest experience: sounds, plants, river views, insects, birds, monkeys, and the atmosphere of the jungle.
