The National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), part of the Ministry of Environment, reported that over 2.4 million people visited Peru’s PNAs in 2024, an increase of more than 470,000 visitors compared to 2023. This growth reflects the solidification of these areas as highly attractive destinations for both national and international tourism, driven by:

  • Upgraded infrastructure: Enhanced access, signage, and visitor services.
  • Focus on sustainable tourism: Programs that balance conservation with tourism.
  • Organized activities: Strategies designed to optimize visitor experiences and minimize environmental impact.

Most-visited protected areas in 2024

  • Paracas National Reserve (Ica): Renowned for its desert landscapes and marine wildlife.
  • Ballestas Islands in the Guaneras Islands and Points System (Ica): Home to sea lions, penguins, and guano birds.
  • Huascarán National Park (Áncash): The heart of the Andes and a favorite for trekking enthusiasts.
  • Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary (Cusco): One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Sernanp’s Chief, José Carlos Nieto, emphasized that the increase in visits not only strengthens local and regional economies but also encourages greater community involvement in conservation efforts. He also noted that in 2024, Peru’s PNAs received international recognition, including the Green Destinations Awards, which celebrate their contribution to responsible tourism.
