Despite a recent press in which the head of the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, Nino Solar, informed that the Huayna Picchu mountain would be open to the visitors again this April 11 after restoration and reconditioning works, recent rains and the discovery of new Inca walls in its path delayed this opening.

Thus, the Cusco Culture Directorate has announced the extension of the temporary closure of Route 3-A (Huayna Picchu) until April 27, 2025, resuming the entry from April 28, 2025. This decision responds to restoration and conservation work on recently discovered Inca walls. The objective is to protect the archaeological heritage and ensure a safe experience for both visitors and guides.

In addition, it is reported that routes 3-C (Great Cavern) and 3-D (Huchuy Picchu) will also be closed from April 17 to 20, 2025, as they are directly connected to the Huayna Picchu Visitor's Route.

Huayna Picchu and the other Machu Picchu mountains

However, not everything is lost. In addition to Huayna Picchu, there are other mountains surrounding the great Inca citadel. We can mention the mountain of the same name, Machu Picchu, the Huchuy Picchu, or the Putucusi. But, the area also offers interesting trails in the lower areas of the mountain, such as the visit to the Cathars of Mandor, the hot springs of the Aguas Calientes town or the 3-hour walk from Aguas Calientes to the Hidroeléctrica train station, where you can take buses to the Santa Teresa town and enjoy its beautiful hot springs.

As you can see, if you had planned to explore the trails of the surrounding Machu Picchu mountains, we recommend you to reorganize your itinerary and keep up to date with the official updates that we will be publishing. The magic of Machu Picchu is still waiting for you, with many other routes to discover!
