The Andean Community (Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru) welcomes over 16 million visitors annually, generating 2.2 million jobs and positioning itself as a key hub for both regional and international tourism.
According to data from UNWTO 2022, the tourism sector plays a significant economic and social role in the Andean subregion. The Virtual Forum on the Tourism Potential of the Andean Community**, organized by the CAN General Secretariat, highlighted progress and challenges in tourism across the four member countries.
Gonzalo Gutiérrez, Secretary-General of the CAN, emphasized the positive impact of tourism on the region’s economy. "The Andean Community has an exceptional opportunity to attract more tourists, especially to lesser-known destinations that offer an impressive cultural, historical, and gastronomic richness," Gutiérrez said.
He also pointed out that while the CAN represented just **1% of global travelers in 2022**, there is vast potential to increase its international appeal by offering innovative and sustainable tourism products that align with global market trends.
Intra-community tourism: A growing force
A significant highlight is that 4 out of 10 tourists visiting an Andean country come from within the subregion. This dynamic is supported by agreements such as passport- and visa-free travel for CAN citizens, fostering more accessible and dynamic tourism.
This internal flow reflects the cultural strength and connection among Andean countries, which share traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and a sense of community that transcends borders.
New strategies for a promising future
The forum outlined several key strategies:
- Promoting lesser-known destinations: Highlighting alternative routes and experiences that integrate local communities.
- Sustainable tourism: Prioritizing environmental conservation and inclusive economic development.
- Adapting to new trends: Creating digital, personalized tourism offerings focused on unique experiences.
- Regional collaboration: Strengthening partnerships among member countries to position the CAN as a must-visit global destination.
