The Inca citadel has returned to its original limit of 4,500 tourists per day. During the busy season, up to 5,600 visitors were allowed each day. This temporary increase in the number of visitors was in effect from June 1 to October 15, according to Ministerial Resolution 000207-2024-MC.
Saúl Caipani, head of Gercetur Cusco, explained that this reduction was discussed in the fifth meeting of the Machu Picchu Management Unit (UGM). Another meeting is already planned to continue talking about this topic.
"We have asked to review the technical reports prepared by Gercetur and the municipality of Machu Picchu. These reports show that the high season was steady, and there wasn’t really a low season anymore," he explained.
Caipani also mentioned that there is a high demand from tourists who travel to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo and the Hydroelectric Station, which is the second most popular route. The number of visitors is expected to grow until the end of the year, so a new limit needs to be set for 2025.
Finally, he said that the flexible limit allowed important changes, such as setting up geoblocks over an area of 5,000 square meters and installing security cameras to improve the organization and management of the tourist site.
