Cusco City will soon host the great Inti Raymi 2023 festival! Fiestas del Cusco and Inti Raymi 2023 were launched at Huaca Pucllana in Miraflores on December 3, 2022, by President Dina Boluarte and Minister Luis Fernando Helguero from Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry. Over 70,000 tourists are expected to celebrate Inti Raymi this June 24th, 2023!
Inti Raymi is a festival celebrated by the Incas to honor their sun god, Inti. It is also called the Festival of the Sun. This festival was celebrated during the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. It used to be the most important of the 4 major Incan ceremonies held in Cusco, the Incan Empire's capital.
Inti Raymi is celebrated every year on June 24th in Cusco and is a big cultural event that attracts people worldwide. The festival has parades with lots of colors, traditional music and dance performances, fancy costumes, and historical reenactments.
The reenactment is usually performed in three parts at three different locations during the festival:
The ancient Temple of the Sun is located in the center of Cusco City. The emperor, known as the Sapa Inca, accompanied by his wife Coya and the Great priest (Willac Umo) will start the ceremony by welcoming the sun God.
Plaza de Armas:
At the plaza de Armas, the Inca, his wife Coya, and his generals (Sinchis) entered the plaza where sacrifices were offered to the Sun God before continuing to Sacsayhuaman.
The main celebration happens at Sacsayhuamán, the Inca site in Cusco's upper part. They do different rituals to ensure they have good crops and thank the sun for its warmth and light. One of the rituals is a llama sacrifice, but now they pretend to do it.
Inti Raymi is a significant cultural event for the local Quechuan people. Although it's a grand spectacle, observing the celebration with respect is crucial.
