I went on the 4d/3n Inca trail led by Wilian Elvis starting on the 23rd August and the whole experience was fantastic. I am a young, relatively inexperienced hiker, but spending 2-3 days in Cusco beforehand was enough to acclimatize to the altitude and although not easy, the 4 day Inca trail was well within our physical capabilities. The Andes are beautiful and the guides and other people on the trail mean you're never alone. Doing the full 4 day trail to Machu Picchu is totally worth it and I recommend it to anybody without medical issues that may prevent them. The camping was much less daunting than I expected: I was less cold than for example previous times I have been camping in Scotland. I would definitely advise packing layers as usual but the sleeping bags we rented were warm and I had no trouble with the cold. Our guides Wilian and Miguel looked after the group extremely carefully on the trail, allowing faster people the chance to go ahead with one guide and another staying behind with the slowest. Wilian is incredibly knowledge about each of the dozens of inca sites along the trail, with talks on each site at rest points or at camp later in the evening, and his own genuine interests and research into Inca history means he could answer all our questions beyond what was included in a standard guided tour or explain to us existing theories on questions whose answers were not yet discovered by historians. This made for a fantastic experience, better than any other I have experienced with tour guides in the past. Finally, with Trexperience in particular we found that the food provided at meal times was way above expectations: our chef Julio Cesar provided buffet style meals for us with 5 or 6 different options at every meal and vegetarian alternatives as well. We were also given plenty of hot drinks around meal times. To be truthful, I would have been more than happy with less variety in our meals, if it meant less work for the porters and chefs. Our porters, led by Benito, worked extremely hard with all our tents and belongings set up long before we reached camps. The porters also found several items left behind and lost by members of our groups which were returned to them safely, which was extremely impressive given the number of other things they were responsible for. Do try to book directly with Trexperience if you can. We chose them in part because of the excellent reviews, and partly because they are a more local company. If you book with a multinational company, your experience will be contracted out to a local company anyway, but you will not have any control over which one. Moreover, if you book directly more of your money stays within the region instead of a larger company taking a cut. Thank you Wilian, Miguel, Benito and Julio Cesar. For us this was a trip of a lifetime and extremely special.
