The decision comes in response to the increase in visitors during the high season. In recent weeks, in-person ticket sales have led to long lines, overcrowding, and complaints about how the service is managed in Machu Picchu Pueblo.
Under this system, travelers can purchase one of the 1,000 in-person tickets available each day for a visit date within the following three days. These spaces are offered in addition to the 4,600 tickets available through the official platform.
The main change is that arriving in Aguas Calientes without a ticket no longer guarantees entry to Machu Picchu on the same day. The visit date will depend on the availability shown at the time of purchase.
For this reason, travelers who choose to buy their tickets in person should keep in mind that they may need to stay in Machu Picchu Pueblo for one to three days. This means planning accommodation, meals, train tickets, and the return date more carefully.
The measure aims to provide more opportunities to visit Machu Picchu, but it also highlights the importance of checking availability and securing tickets before completing the rest of the travel arrangements.
