For the fourth year in a row, Cusco was named the best city in Central and South America in the 2026 World’s Best Awards, organized by Travel + Leisure magazine. The results were based on ratings from thousands of travelers, who reviewed each destination’s culture, food, customer service, shopping, tourist attractions, and travel services.

The award confirms Cusco’s strong reputation as an international destination. This year, readers praised both its history and the wide range of activities available in and around the city.

With a score of 88.05, the former capital of the Inca Empire took first place. Bogotá came in second with 87.97 points, followed by Mendoza with 87.46 and Antigua Guatemala with 84.23. The ranking also included Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Cartagena, Panama City, and Quito.

This recognition has brought even more attention to Cusco, often considered the best city in Peru. It also gives travelers another reason to visit, especially those interested in history, local food, and ancient Andean traditions.

Cusco food, markets and Andean Landscapes

Travel + Leisure also noted that Cusco is much more than a gateway to the Andes. The well-known magazine praised its traditional markets, creative cocktail bars, Novo-Andean restaurants, and the lively atmosphere found throughout its streets.

The city also stood out for its hiking routes and its easy access to natural landscapes and archaeological sites. These experiences give visitors the chance to explore the region at a slower pace and discover places that are often left out of standard travel itineraries.

Much more than Machu Picchu

Cusco offers plenty of options for travelers who want to extend their stay. These include hikes along the Inca Trail and the Salkantay Trek, day trips to Palcoyo or Vinicunca, visits to Pisac and Ollantaytambo, and tours of mountain archaeological sites such as Choquequirao.

Visitors can also explore some of the most popular Cusco attractions, including Cusco Cathedral, Coricancha, and Sacsayhuaman. Along the way, they can try dishes made with local ingredients from the Andes.

In June, the festivals in Cusco fill the streets with music, parades, and cultural events. This is also when Inti Raymi takes center stage. It is considered one of the most faithful modern-day recreations of an Inca celebration.

One of the Best-Known Awards in the Travel Industry

The World’s Best Awards recognize leading destinations and businesses across the global travel industry. The winners are chosen through an annual survey conducted by Travel + Leisure, a well-known international travel magazine.

Readers vote for their favorite experiences in categories such as cities, hotels, islands, airlines, and tour operators. The 2026 results were published on the Travel + Leisure website and will also appear in the magazine’s August print edition.

With this latest first-place finish, Cusco has now led the “Best City in Central and South America” category for four years in a row. It also remains one of the region’s most highly rated travel destinations.
