Peru Highlights 9 Days: Lima, Short Inca Trail, Machu Picchu and Amazon - Overview

This Peru Tour 9 Days is built around one idea: a shorter route should never feel like a reduced experience. You hike the Short Inca Trail in one day, from Km 104 past Wiñay Wayna to the Sun Gate, and see Machu Picchu appear below you. The next morning you go back with your guide to understand it. Then you trade the Andes for the Amazon: three nights at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, with guided walks, canoes and a canopy walkway above the trees.

Lima and Cusco come first, with city tours and time to acclimatize. Hotels are named, the Inca Trail permit is booked in your name, and a local guide meets you at every stage. TreXperience is a 100% Peruvian tour operator based in Cusco, run by people who started out working on the Inca Trail.

Tour Highlights:

  • Lima in one afternoon: the Miraflores cliffs, Huaca Pucllana, the historic center and the San Francisco catacombs, with a pisco tasting.
  • Cusco and the Sacred Valley: Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Pisac and its market, Moray and the Maras Salt Mines, with a night in Ollantaytambo before the trail.
  • The Short Inca Trail: 13 km / 8 mi in one day, with picnic breakfast and lunch from our trekking chefs, Wiñay Wayna, and the walk through the Sun Gate into Machu Picchu.
  • Machu Picchu twice: from above on Day 4, then a guided visit on Day 5 to walk its terraces, temples and plazas.
  • The Vistadome train back, with panoramic windows along the Urubamba River, and a private transfer to Cusco.
  • Three nights in the Amazon: Lake Sandoval by canoe, the Canopy Walkway 42 m / 138 ft above the forest floor, a twilight river cruise and a night walk with an Explorer Guide.

Full Itinerary of the Peru Tour 9 Days

Nine days in three worlds: the coast, the Andes and the Amazon. Here is each day with times, meals and hotels. Private service, extra nights and upgrades are arranged on request.

Day 1: Arrival in Lima - Afternoon City Tour

Welcome to Peru. We meet you at Lima airport and drive you to your hotel in Miraflores, Casa Andina Standard or similar. Rest, have lunch on your own and get ready for the afternoon.

Around 2:00 p.m., your guide picks you up. First, the ocean side: Parque del Amor on the Miraflores cliffs, with its mosaic walls and the sculpture El Beso, and a view of Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Inca adobe pyramid in the middle of the city.

Then the old center: Plaza San Martín, Plaza Mayor with the Government Palace and the Cathedral, and the Convent of San Francisco, with its library, cloisters and underground catacombs. There is a pisco tasting along the way. Back in Miraflores around 6:00 p.m. Rest early: tomorrow you fly to the Andes.

  • Meals: not included
  • Tour: half day, about 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
  • Hotel: Casa Andina Standard, Lima, or similar 3-star hotel

Tips: Arrive in Lima in the morning so you can join the tour. Bring walking shoes, a light jacket, sunscreen and some cash. More ideas in our Lima travel guide.

Day 2: Flight to Cusco - Afternoon City Tour

After breakfast, we take you to Lima airport for the flight to Cusco, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Our Cusco team meets you and drives you to San Agustín Internacional or a similar 3-star hotel near the historic center.

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m / 11,155 ft. Use the late morning to rest, drink water and eat light. Walking slowly today makes a real difference.

Around 1:00 p.m., your guide picks you up. On foot: the Plaza de Armas, the old Inca streets, the Twelve-Angled Stone and Qoricancha, the Temple of the Sun, where Inca walls stand inside a colonial convent. Then by vehicle to the sites above the city: Sacsayhuaman and its huge zigzag walls, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay, with its still-running fountains. When time allows, a stop at Cristo Blanco for the view.

  • Meals: breakfast at the hotel
  • Tour: half day
  • Hotel: San Agustín Internacional, Cusco, or similar 3-star hotel
  • Maximum altitude: about 3,700 m / 12,139 ft
  • Difficulty: easy, with walking and stairs at altitude

Tips: Walk slowly, drink water, skip alcohol today and tell your guide if you feel unwell. Bring a warm layer, rain protection and sunscreen. The next three days are lower than Cusco, and most people find them easier. See our guide to altitude in Cusco.

Day 3: Sacred Valley - Pisac, Moray and Maras - Night in Ollantaytambo

Pickup at 7:00 a.m. for a full day in the Sacred Valley, the green corridor of the Urubamba River where Inca terraces still feed the villages below them.

First, an alpaca and llama farm, where you learn why these animals matter so much in Andean life. Then the Taray viewpoint for the classic view over the valley, and Pisac: terraces and temples above the town, and time in its colorful market below.

After lunch in the valley, the circular terraces of Moray and the Maras Salt Mines, where local families still harvest salt the way they always have. The day ends in Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town and the best place to sleep before the trail. Tonight your guide confirms the time for tomorrow.

  • Meals: breakfast and lunch
  • Tour: full day
  • Hotel: Cocatambo, Ollantaytambo, or similar
  • Difficulty: easy

Tips: Pack a small bag for two nights, Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes; your main suitcase stays at your Cusco hotel or in our free storage. Lay out your hiking clothes tonight. More in our Sacred Valley guide.

Day 4: Short Inca Trail - Wiñay Wayna - Sun Gate - Machu Picchu

The adventure day. After an early breakfast in Ollantaytambo, the train follows the Urubamba River to Km 104, the official start of the Short Inca Trail. At the checkpoint you show your original passport and begin with your guide.

Before the hike, our trekking team has a fresh picnic breakfast ready. Then Chachabamba, an Inca site near the river, and a gradual climb through cloud forest: mountain views, orchids, waterfalls and original Inca stone paths under your boots.

After several hours you reach Wiñay Wayna, terraces and temples hanging over the valley, where your guide explains the site before a picnic lunch prepared by our trekking chefs.

In the afternoon, the last stretch to the Sun Gate, Intipunku. The trail opens, the mountains step back and Machu Picchu appears below you. We stop there; nobody rushes you. Then down to the upper viewpoints for the classic photos, the bus to Aguas Calientes, check-in at Ferré Machu Picchu or similar and dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Meals: picnic breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
  • Hike: 13 km / 8 mi, around 7 hours
  • Highest point: 2,700 m / 8,858 ft
  • Hotel: Ferré Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes, or similar 3-star hotel
  • Difficulty: moderate

Tips: Original passport, hiking shoes with grip, rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, 1.5 liters of water and snacks. Trekking poles must have rubber tips. Read our Short Inca Trail guide before you go.

Day 5: Machu Picchu Guided Tour - Vistadome Train - Cusco

After breakfast, the bus back up to Machu Picchu for your main guided visit. Yesterday you saw it from above; today you walk through it. Your guide takes you through terraces, temples, plazas, royal quarters and sacred spaces, and explains how a city was built on a ridge between two peaks.

Your route inside depends on the official ticket and circuit assigned for your date; we plan the schedule around the best option available, so the visit feels calm and complete. If you booked Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain in advance, the hike comes after the tour.

Bus down to Aguas Calientes and lunch on your own. In the afternoon, the Vistadome train to Ollantaytambo, with panoramic windows along the river, and a private transfer to your Cusco hotel for your last night in the Andes.

  • Meals: breakfast at the hotel
  • Guided tour: around 2.5 hours, plus buses
  • Altitude: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
  • Return: Vistadome train and private transfer to Cusco
  • Hotel: San Agustín Internacional, Cusco, or similar 3-star hotel
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate, with stairs and uneven stone paths

Tips: Passport, small daypack, rain protection, sunscreen and water. No large bags, drones, tripods or food inside. See our Machu Picchu rules guide. Tonight, repack for the jungle: light clothes, long sleeves and repellent on top.

Day 6: Flight to Puerto Maldonado - Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica

After breakfast, our team takes you to Cusco airport for the flight to Puerto Maldonado. This flight is not included; buy it only after our reservations team confirms the recommended schedule.

In Puerto Maldonado, the lodge team welcomes you and drives you to the river pier. Your rainforest days begin with a 45-minute ride in a motorized wooden boat along the Madre de Dios River, watching the town disappear as the forest closes in.

At Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, a short welcome briefing explains the excursions on offer, so your stay can follow your interests. Depending on your arrival time, lunch, then your cabana and a hammock. In the afternoon, a walk along the Trail System with your Explorer Guide: towering trees, birds, insects and the chance of monkeys or sloths high in the branches.

At sunset, a gentle Twilight River cruise to watch the forest change shifts. Look along the banks for nightjars, owls, capybaras and caimans. Back at the lodge, an Amazon-inspired dinner with a complimentary pisco cocktail, and sleep to the sound of the rainforest.

  • Meals: breakfast at the hotel, lunch depending on arrival time, and dinner at the lodge
  • Not included: flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado
  • Transport: road and 45-minute boat transfer to the lodge
  • Lodge: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica
  • Difficulty: easy

Tips: Long sleeves and trousers in light fabrics, insect repellent, a headlamp, a rain poncho and a dry bag for your phone. Ask your doctor about the yellow fever vaccine well before you travel.

Day 7: Lake Sandoval - Canopy Walkway - Rainforest by Night

Start early, as the forest wakes around you. After breakfast, travel with your Explorer Guide to Lake Sandoval, a quiet oxbow lake inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve.

A shaded trail leads toward the lake, with monkeys, butterflies and bright birds along the way. Then a traditional wooden canoe, paddled quietly through a narrow stream and out onto open water. The lake is home to giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, side-necked turtles, black caimans and many tropical birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, but your guide helps you notice the sounds, tracks and movements most visitors miss.

Back at the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway: suspension bridges linking eight platforms high above the forest floor, with the first tower 42 m / 138 ft up. From the treetops, look for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and three-toed sloths.

After dark, the Rainforest by Night walk with a flashlight and your guide: frogs, insects and the animals that only appear after sunset. Dinner at the lodge. An ENA Spa treatment, sunset drinks on a canopy tower or a Tree House night can be requested at extra cost.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge
  • Tour: full day
  • Lodge: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate, with a forest walk and a canoe

Tips: Binoculars make this day. Wear closed shoes, apply repellent before each walk and keep your camera in a dry bag on the canoe.

Day 8: Gamitana Creek - Hacienda Concepción - Canoe at Dusk

After breakfast, a short boat ride to the Gamitana farm, where local families grow forest fruits and crops; taste what is in season, then walk a jungle trail to Gamitana Creek, known for piranhas, caimans, turtles and birds. Back to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, a boat upriver to Hacienda Concepción, Inkaterra’s sister lodge on a former cocoa and rubber plantation that once served as a mission medical post and research station. Your guide explains its plants and their traditional uses. Then a quiet canoe trip at dusk to look for turtles, grebes, nightjars and herons, and a last dinner at the lodge.

The three-day Inkaterra program is a suggested itinerary. Excursions are chosen at the lodge and may change with your interests, flight times, weather, river conditions and wildlife activity.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge
  • Tour: full day
  • Lodge: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica
  • Difficulty: easy

Tips: Pack your bag tonight and check your flight time for tomorrow. Tipping the lodge staff and guides is optional and always your choice.

Day 9: Amazon - Transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport

Breakfast and a last morning surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest. Watch for bright birds in the trees and small animals moving between the cabanas before you pack.

Check-out is at 10:00 a.m. Depending on your flight, lunch can be arranged at the lodge at extra cost. Then the 45-minute boat ride back along the Madre de Dios River and your transfer to Puerto Maldonado airport, where the TreXperience service ends. The onward flight is not included.

  • Meals: breakfast at the lodge
  • Not included: lunch and the flight from Puerto Maldonado
  • Tour ends: Puerto Maldonado airport

More tips in our Peru Packing List.

What to Put in the Daypack?

On the trail: 1.5 liters of water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain poncho, camera and personal items; trekking poles need rubber tips. In the jungle: repellent, headlamp, binoculars, a dry bag for your phone and a refillable bottle.

What to Pack for the Trail Nights and the Lodge?

Travel Information for the Peru Tour 9 Days

What to know before you book: permits, the pace, the flights you need, altitude, the Short Inca Trail itself, Machu Picchu tickets, the Amazon lodge, health in the jungle, hotels, weather and luggage.

How do Short Inca Trail permits work, and when should I book?

The Short Inca Trail runs on a daily permit system with a few hundred spaces, including guides and support staff. Permits are issued in your name with your passport number and cannot be changed, refunded or transferred. We can only request yours once we have your traveler details and the deposit.

For May to September, book at least three months ahead; popular dates go earlier. The trail closes every February for maintenance. If your date is sold out, we tell you right away and suggest the closest alternative. More in our Short Inca Trail guide.

How is the 9-day itinerary paced, and which flights do I need?

Three city or valley days, one hiking day, one Machu Picchu morning and three days of lodge excursions. Early starts: Day 3 at 7:00 a.m., an early train on Day 4, and the first lodge walks around sunrise if you choose them. Arrive in Lima in the morning on Day 1 to join the city tour.

You need three domestic flights: Lima to Cusco on Day 2 [TO CONFIRM whether included], Cusco to Puerto Maldonado on Day 6 and Puerto Maldonado onward on Day 9. Wait for our recommended times before you buy; we plan the lodge boats and your airport transfers around them.

How should I prepare for the altitude?

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m / 11,155 ft and the city tour on Day 2 reaches about 3,700 m / 12,139 ft. The next days are lower: Ollantaytambo at about 2,800 m / 9,186 ft, the Sun Gate at 2,700 m / 8,858 ft and Machu Picchu at 2,430 m / 7,972 ft. That order helps your body before the hike.

Walk slowly, drink water, eat light and skip alcohol on your first days. Tell your guide right away if you have a strong headache, dizziness, nausea or trouble breathing. See our guide to altitude in Cusco and the CDC high-altitude guidance. Want an extra day to adjust? Add a night in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

How hard is the Short Inca Trail?

Moderate. About 13 km / 8 mi and around 7 hours including stops, with a steady climb from Km 104 to Wiñay Wayna and a final stretch to the Sun Gate at 2,700 m / 8,858 ft. Anyone who walks regularly and takes it slowly can do it; your guide sets a pace for the group and carries a first-aid kit and oxygen.

You carry only a daypack. Our trekking team prepares the picnic breakfast at Km 104 and lunch at Wiñay Wayna. The path is original Inca stone, uneven and sometimes slippery in the rain, so bring shoes with grip and poles with rubber tips.

How do Machu Picchu tickets, circuits and visitor rules work?

You enter twice. On Day 4, your Short Inca Trail permit takes you through the Sun Gate to the upper viewpoints. On Day 5, a separate ticket covers the guided visit; the route depends on the official circuit assigned for your date, and we plan around the best option available when your booking is confirmed.

Bring the original passport used for your booking; it must match the permit and the ticket. No large bags, drones, tripods or food inside. See our Machu Picchu circuits guide, our Machu Picchu rules guide, or the official circuits and routes.

What are the Lima, Cusco and Sacred Valley tours like?

Lima is one afternoon: Miraflores, the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the San Francisco catacombs, plus a pisco tasting. Cusco is a half day on foot and by vehicle through Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay. The Sacred Valley is a full day: an alpaca and llama farm, the Taray viewpoint, Pisac and its market, lunch, Moray and the Maras Salt Mines, ending in Ollantaytambo.

All listed entrance tickets are included. More on the UNESCO Historic Centre of Lima page, in our Sacred Valley guide, or at COSITUC, the official Cusco Tourist Ticket site.

What is the Amazon lodge like, and what is included there?

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica sits on the Madre de Dios River, 45 minutes by boat from Puerto Maldonado, with private cabanas, a main house for meals and a network of trails, towers and bridges. Your stay includes three nights, meals from lunch on arrival (depending on your flight) to breakfast on departure, the welcome pisco cocktail, and guided excursions with Inkaterra Explorer Guides.

The three-day program on this page is a suggested itinerary: excursions are presented at the lodge and chosen with your guide, and they may change with weather, river conditions and wildlife activity. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Spa treatments, sunset drinks on a canopy tower and the Tree House night cost extra.

Do I need vaccines or special precautions for the jungle?

Ask your doctor at least a month before you travel about the yellow fever vaccine, which is commonly recommended for the Madre de Dios region, and about any other vaccines or malaria advice for your situation. We are not doctors and cannot give medical advice.

Day to day: long sleeves and trousers in the morning and evening, repellent before every walk, closed shoes on the trails, a headlamp for the night walk, and bottled or filtered water from the lodge.

Which hotels, trains and luggage services are included?

Hotels: Casa Andina Standard in Miraflores, Lima (one night), San Agustín Internacional in Cusco (two nights), Cocatambo in Ollantaytambo (one night) and Ferré Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes (one night), or similar, plus three nights at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica. The exact hotel appears in your booking confirmation.

Trains: the morning train to Km 104 on Day 4 and the Vistadome train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo on Day 5, with panoramic windows. Compare the trains in our guide to the Machu Picchu trains.

Luggage: on Day 3 you leave Cusco with a small bag for two nights; your main suitcase stays at your Cusco hotel or in our free storage until Day 5. On the trail you carry only a daypack. For the jungle, pack a soft bag; airline baggage rules depend on the carrier you choose.

What is the weather like, and when is the best time to travel?

Cusco and the trail are drier from April to October and wetter from November to March; the Short Inca Trail closes in February. Lima is grey and mild from May to November and sunnier from December to April. The Amazon is hot and humid all year, with more rain from December to March and occasional cold fronts between May and August.

No season guarantees clear skies at the Sun Gate or calm water on the lake, so bring layers and a rain shell in any month. See our Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu guide or the official Machu Picchu forecast from SENAMHI, Peru’s weather service.

Because you arrive the way the Incas did. The train drops you at Km 104, and from there every step is original stone path through cloud forest, past Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, until the trail opens at the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu appears below. It is one day, no camping, and a hotel bed that night.

The next morning you go back with your guide to walk through the citadel itself. Two visits, two very different views, and you still fly to the Amazon on Day 6.

How far ahead should I book, and what if permits are sold out?

At least three months ahead for May to September, and as early as you can for any date; permits are limited and issued in your name once we have your passport details and deposit. The trail closes every February.

If your date is sold out, we tell you straight away and suggest the nearest available date, or a version of this trip with a hotel-based Machu Picchu visit instead of the trail [TO CONFIRM].

Which flights do I need, and are they included?

Three domestic flights: Lima to Cusco on Day 2 [TO CONFIRM whether included], Cusco to Puerto Maldonado on Day 6 and Puerto Maldonado onward on Day 9. International flights are not included. Wait for our team to confirm the recommended times before you buy, so the lodge boat and the airport transfers match your flights.

How fit do I need to be for the Short Inca Trail?

Moderately fit. It is 13 km / 8 mi in around 7 hours with stops, a steady climb on stone steps and a high point of 2,700 m / 8,858 ft, lower than Cusco. Regular walkers manage it well at a calm pace; your guide adjusts the rhythm, and a first-aid kit and oxygen travel with the group. Tell us before booking about any knee, heart or lung concern.

Which hotels and lodge are included?

Casa Andina Standard Miraflores in Lima, San Agustín Internacional in Cusco (two nights), Cocatambo in Ollantaytambo and Ferré Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes, or similar, plus three nights at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica in a private cabana. The exact hotel appears in your booking confirmation. Upgrades cost extra.

Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?

Yes, on Day 5, one of them only, with a separate ticket booked in advance. Huayna Picchu takes about 2 hours round trip and Machu Picchu Mountain about 3. Both sell out fast and must fit your circuit and your Vistadome train, so tell us when you book.

What is the Amazon part like, and will I see wildlife?

Three nights at a river lodge with guided excursions morning, afternoon and night: the Trail System, the Twilight River cruise, Lake Sandoval by canoe, the Canopy Walkway, the Rainforest by Night walk, and a farm, creek and historic hacienda visit. You choose the excursions at the lodge with your Explorer Guide.

Giant river otters, monkeys, macaws, caimans and sloths all live here, and guides know where to look, but animals move freely and sightings are never guaranteed. Bring binoculars and patience; the forest rewards both.

Do I need the yellow fever vaccine?

Many health authorities recommend it for the Madre de Dios region, where the lodge is. Ask your doctor or a travel clinic at least a month before you fly, and ask about mosquito protection too. We cannot give medical advice, but we can tell you what to pack: long sleeves, repellent and a headlamp.

What meals are included, and can you help with special diets?

Breakfasts Days 2 to 9, lunch in the Sacred Valley, picnic breakfast and lunch on the trail, dinner in Aguas Calientes, and full board at the lodge from arrival (lunch depending on your flight) to breakfast on Day 9. Other meals are on your own in Lima, Cusco, Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes.

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free and allergy requests can usually be arranged on the trail and at the lodge if you tell us in advance; our trekking chefs cook the trail meals fresh that morning.

Can solo travelers join, and can the tour be customized?

Yes. Solo travelers can join a small-group departure or book the single-traveler private rate, subject to availability. Ask us about room options when you book.

You can add extra nights, upgrade hotels, add a mountain hike or a Tree House night, request private service for selected parts of the trip, or extend to Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, Lake Titicaca or the Colca Canyon. For the full four-day trek instead, see our Classic Inca Trail and Amazon 11 Days. Changes depend on availability and may change the price.
