History of Mother’s Day in Peru

Mother's Day was the brainchild of American Anna Jarvis, who, inspired by the struggle, sacrifice, and dedication of her activist mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis (who died in 1905), launched a movement to establish Mother's Day in the United States in 1907. Finally, her efforts paid off seven years later, when President Woodrow Wilson officially designated Mother’s Day in the United States as the second Sunday in May; the date closest to the anniversary of Ann Reeves Jarvis’s death.

Peru Mother’s Day has only been celebrated since 1924, thanks to an initiative by a group of students from the Mayor University of San Marcos (Lima). Who, inspired by American Mother’s Day, submitted a petition to the Peruvian government, which was then led by the politician and businessman Augusto B. Leguía. In this form, a supreme resolution No. 677, dated April 12 of that year, was enacted, establishing the second Sunday in May as Peruvian Mother’s Day.

Thus, Peru has come up with its own way of celebrating it. Although the idea was imported from the United State, Peruvians transformed it to suit their culture, which embraces family and motherhood.
