According to the Cusco Regional Directorate of Culture (DDC Cusco), the Inca trail undergoes preventive maintenance annually during February. These efforts aim to preserve the infrastructure of this ancient route and ensure visitor safety, with the trail reopening in March.

Jorge Luis Moya, director of DDC Cusco, told Agencia Andina that a team of 30 specialized workers will be deployed along the trail to reinforce structures affected by heavy rainfall. “According to current regulations, the Inca Trail must remain closed in February due to heavy rains that make it inaccessible and hazardous for hikers,” Moya explained.

During the closure, various cleaning, restoration, and conservation tasks will take place, including:

  • Reinforcement of walls and archaeological structures at key sites such as Patallaqta, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Wiñaywayna, and Inti Punku.
  • Upkeep of infrastructure, including stairways, water channels, ceremonial fountains, and monuments along the route.
  • Improvement of campsites in Huayllabamba, Pacaymayo Alto, and Wiñay Wayna, ensuring better conditions for future visitors.
  • Cleaning of stone pathways, drainage channels, and rest areas, along with the inspection of bridges, handrails, and restroom facilities to enhance the trekking experience.

What is the Inca Trail?

This journey, typically lasting four days and three nights, ranks among Peru’s top tourist attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year.

Authorities have assured that the trail will reopen in March, fully restored and ready to welcome travelers eager to experience its natural beauty and rich history in a safe environment.
