Starting January 8, 2025, Peruvians traveling to the UK will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), a new requirement for short stays or transit. This measure aims to strengthen border security and simplify migration processes.
From November 27, Peruvians can apply for the ETA, which will become mandatory on January 8, 2025. This electronic permit allows entry for tourism, business, family visits, or transit through the UK. Exceptions include holders of British or Irish passports, visas, or work and study permits.
Diplomats face different rules: those on official duty in the UK must obtain an "electronic exempt vignette," while non-resident holders of diplomatic passports will require the ETA.
How to apply for the ETA
Applications can be submitted through the official website https://www.gov.uk or the "UK ETA" app. Travelers must apply at least three days before their planned trip. Confirmation typically arrives quickly via email, although additional verification may sometimes extend processing times.
The ETA remains valid for two years and allows multiple entries into the UK during this period. However, a new authorization will be required if the traveler’s passport expires before the ETA.
If an ETA application is denied, travelers can apply for a visitor, transit, or temporary work visa as an alternative.
What Peruvians should consider
- Plan ahead: Apply for your ETA at least three days before your scheduled trip.
- Check passport validity: Ensure your passport’s validity exceeds the ETA period to avoid complications.
- Explore alternatives: If the ETA is denied, consider available visa options.
With this new requirement, the UK reinforces its commitment to security for Peru while facilitating traveler mobility, marking a significant update to its migration policy.
