Machu Picchu, Peru, continues advancing its sustainability commitment by introducing two electric buses (eBuses) for tourist transportation. These autonomous vehicles provide an efficient alternative for visitors while contributing to reducing the environmental footprint of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Two state-of-the-art electric buses, also known as eBuses, will operate between Aguas Calientes and the Inca Citadel. They will serve both international tourists and locals, marking a milestone in sustainable tourism for the region.
eBus features:
- Range and efficiency: Each bus is equipped with a 250-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, allowing up to 250 km of travel per charge.
- Daily capacity: The eBuses can transport over 300 tourists daily, ensuring efficient and sustainable travel.
- Environmental Impact: According to Walter Sciutto, General Manager of Pluz Energía, these buses will help prevent the emission of 40 tons of CO2 annually, directly supporting the preservation of Machu Picchu’s delicate ecosystem.
The introduction of these electric buses is the result of a collaboration between Pluz Energía and Consettur, the official tourist transportation operator for the Machu Picchu route. To ensure smooth operations, charging stations will also be installed at key locations.
These vehicles not only enhance the tourist experience with their silent and eco-friendly operation but also reinforce Peru’s dedication to adopting clean technologies in strategic sectors.
The benefits of the eBuses were highlighted by stakeholders, emphasizing their importance for the future of transportation in protected areas like Machu Picchu. By combining advanced technology with sustainable practices, this initiative sets a benchmark for responsible tourism worldwide.
