The decisive stage of the Breakfast World Cup organized by renowned Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos will pit Peru’s classic pan con chicharrón against an emblematic dish from Venezuelan cuisine, the Arepa Pepiada.
The online community had an intense Sunday, September 7, with the announcement of the finalists for the Breakfast World Cup, organized by Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos. After surpassing a combined 28 million votes across his Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok accounts, he confirmed the grand final between Venezuela and Peru: the traditional pan con chicharrón will face Venezuela’s Arepa Pepiada, after both options won their semifinals by a wide margin.
According to Ibai’s updates on his platforms, the semifinal between Chile and Peru set a tournament milestone: the Chilean marraqueta tallied 7.8 million votes, but the Peruvian entry reached nearly 10 million, securing its place in the final. In the other matchup, Venezuela edged Bolivia in a very close contest: 5.5 million for the Venezuelan arepas versus 5.2 million for Bolivia’s salteña, a result that sent the arepa to the grand final.
Peruvian cuisine is represented by pan con chicharrón. It’s a sandwich made with a crusty roll and pieces of fried pork, served with slices of sweet potato and salsa criolla (red onion, chili pepper, and lime juice). It’s often paired with tamal and café pasado: the tamal is a corn dough filled with pork or chicken, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.
On the other side, Venezuela is represented by the Arepa Pepiada, filled with shredded chicken, mayonnaise, and avocado, a combination that has marked several generations. It is always accompanied by a classic drink: Maltín, a non-alcoholic malt soda.
Anticipation for Pan con Chicharron
Ibai Llanos announced that voting for the grand final will open on Monday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m. (Spain), 12:00 p.m. in Peru, and 1:00 p.m. in Venezuela.
