Frequently Asked Questions
The Inca Trail is one of the most popular treks in the world and certainly the most sought after in South America. Whether you have already booked your place or not, you may have some questions about the route. In this section, we will give you answers to the most common questions that travelers ask before trekking the Inca Trail.
When should I arrive in Cusco before starting the Inca Trail?
It’s a good idea to arrive in Cusco 1 to 3 days before starting the Inca Trail. This will give your body time to adapt to the altitude. Remember that Cusco is located at 3, 399 m. (11, 152 f.), which is much higher than many places, so it's important to take some time to get used to it. Plus, arriving early lets you enjoy exploring Cusco before your adventure begins.
What should I do in Cusco to prepare for the Inca Trail?
If you want to prepare for the Inca Trail once in Cusco, it’s best to take the things easy for the first two days. You can walk around the city slowly (You can visit local markets, museums, or nearby ruins, but avoid overdoing it), drink plenty of water, rest when needed, eat light meals (Chicken soup, pumpkin cream), and avoid alcohol. This will help you adapt to the altitude. Preparation in Cusco is all about staying relaxed and letting your body adapt.
How can I avoid altitude sickness during the trek?
To prevent altitude sickness during the trek, it is recommended to drink coca tea, a traditional remedy. Some people prefer to chew coca leaves while walking, which is also an effective option. Others opt to take medications such as Sorojchi pills, but it is important to consult a doctor before using them. Always listen to your body, move at your own pace, and if you feel unwell, avoid overexerting yourself.
What’s the best time of year to hike the Inca Trail?
If you want to do the Inca Trail, keep in mind that the best time to do it is during the dry season (April to October). During these months, the weather is more predictable, with less chance of rain. The skies are clearer, so you get better views of the mountains. These months are also the high season, so be sure to book your tour in advance. On the other hand, the rainy season (November to March) can be more challenging due to wet conditions, but it is quieter and you can see the flora emerge.
What kind of training or preparation is recommended before the trek?
Before doing the Inca Trail, we recommend that you organize short hikes on weekends or twice a month to prepare yourself. Keep in mind that some sections of the Inca Trail are uneven and rocky, so it is important to improve your balance and stability. Include exercises such as planks, side planks and balancing on one leg to strengthen your stability and be better prepared for the Inca Trail. You don’t need to be a professional athlete, but being fit will help you enjoy the trek more and feel less tired along the way.
What equipment is essential for the Inca Trail?
Remember that, during the Inca Trail, the porters will be in charge of carrying a duffel bag, in this bag you can carry up to 7 KG of weight. We recommend you to pack your sleeping bag, waterproof jackets, polar jacket, trekking shoes, trekking pants, hiking socks, hat, waterproof gloves, scarf and rain poncho.
In addition to the duffel bag you can carry a small backpack, one that you will carry during your trek, in this backpack you can put: Your water bottles, or tomatodo (The travel agency provides you with water during all the days of your trek), snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, wet towels, toothbrush, toothpaste, sunglasses, portable chargers, camera and personal medication.
What are the weather conditions like on the Inca Trail?
Cusco has two seasons during the whole year, which are: The dry season and the rainy season. During the dry season (May to October) you will have sunnier days and cooler nights. However, it is possible that even in the dry season you may encounter some rainfall, so it is recommended to be prepared for all types of weather. On the other hand, in rainy season (November to April) you will have rainy days and cooler nights. Remember that the weather on the Inca Trail is changing. You will have cold mornings and afternoons, especially at the highest points of the trek, while the mornings will be warm and sunny, especially in the lower parts of the trek.
Can I hike the Inca Trail if I have dietary restrictions?
Yes, of course you can! When you make your reservation with a travel agency for the Inca Trail, the reservations team will ask about your dietary preferences (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free). If they don't, be sure to inform your agency so they can arrange everything. The cooks on the Inca Trail are experts at preparing a variety of food, so you won't have to worry about going hungry.
What happens if I feel unwell during the trek?
If during your hike on the Inca Trail you start to feel sick, relax, take a deep breath and let your guide know immediately, the guides are trained to act in this type of situation. They will help you slowly descend to a lower altitude so that you can rest and relax. If necessary, they can coordinate your return for a medical attention. Your safety is their priority, so don't hesitate to ask them for help.
How are campsites organized on the Inca Trail?
During the Inca Trail you will go through 4 campsites, these camps will be set up by the porters, who go ahead to arrive first and have everything ready for your arrival at the campsite after an exhausting day of trekking. The porters are also in charge of setting up the food tents. The campsites are shared with other trekking groups, but don't worry, you will have your own comfortable and organized space.
What should I do after completing the Inca Trail?
After completing the Inca Trail we recommend that you explore the city of Cusco, you can take a city tour, or visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Moray, Maras and Chinchero). If you have recovered all your strength, you can also join the trek to the 7 Rainbow Mountain or the Humantay Lake. Do not leave the city without tasting the Cusquenian seasoning, visit the traditional markets of Cusco (San Pedro or San Blas) and if you are looking for a more refined culinary experience visit popular restaurants (Organika, Chicha, Inka grill). Other travelers before returning to their country choose to visit other cities in Peru, such as Puno (Lake Titicaca), Arequipa (Colca Canyon) and Ica (La Huacachina).
Are there any alternative treks if permits for the Inca Trail are sold out?
Yes! We are happy to inform you that Cusco offers different types of treks if the permits for the Inca Trail are sold out. If you are passionate in adventure, snow-capped mountains and heights, we recommend the Salkantay Trek, a more challenging option than the Inca Trail, but really worth it. On the other hand, if what you are looking for is to experience rural community-based tourism, that is, to get to know small villages near the mountains and learn about the local culture, we recommend that you opt for the Lares Trek, a route that takes you to meet the local population of the Cusco mountains. Likewise, Cusco offers you the Inka Jungle, a more exciting route, a route that will take you into extreme sports such as biking and rafting. Other treks such as Choquequirao and Huchuy Qosqo are also available. You can still visit Machu Picchu at the end of these treks, so they’re a fantastic option if the Inca Trail is full.
How long will I spend at Machu Picchu after the trek?
Once you finish the Inca Trail you will enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (IntiPunku) where you can appreciate the sunrise. Once at the archaeological site you will have 2 hours to visit the site in the company of your tour guide. If you want to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you’ll need an extra ticket, but it’s worth it for the views.
What are the advantages of booking a private Inca Trail tour?
The private service for the Inca Trail is going to give you more flexibility. You will be able to walk at your own pace and the tour will be adjusted to your preferences. Being a small group, you will receive a personalized attention from your tour guide, which will facilitate a better understanding of the explanations and instructions. This type of service is ideal for families, couples or anyone looking for a tailor-made adventure.
How does the Short Inca Trail differ from the Classic Inca Trail?
The short Inca Trail lasts 2 days and 1 night, while the full trek is 4 days and 3 nights. Generally, those who choose the short Inca Trail have less time in the city of Cusco, but still want to experience a shorter version of this historic route. Along the short Inca Trail, you will enjoy spectacular scenery, visit archaeological sites such as Wiñaywayna, and both treks culminate in Machu Picchu at sunrise.
What should I expect from the porters and guides during the trek?
Porters carry your gear, set up your campsite, and cook meals. They work incredibly hard to make your experience smooth and comfortable. Guides lead you through the trail, sharing fascinating stories about the Inca history and ensuring your safety. Both porters and guides are there to support you throughout the journey.
What are the cultural highlights of the Inca Trail?
The Inca Trail is filled with cultural treasures where you can pass ancient sites such as Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Intipata, Wiñay Wayna and Inti Punku. The trail itself was once a major route used by the Incas, making the hike not just a physical journey but a cultural one as well.
How much should I tip the porters and guides?
Remember that tipping is optional; instead, it is a way to express gratitude and appreciation to those who made your Inca Trail trip special. Travelers typically offer gratuities to recognize the efforts of porters, tour guides, and chefs. On average, each porter earns approximately 60 soles from the group. The cook typically receives around 180 soles. The tip for tour guides is normally paid on the last day, following the visit to Machu Picchu, and is done on an individual basis. The cost depends on how satisfied you are with their service. Your tour operator will provide recommendations to ensure that tips are equitable and balanced.
