Full Itinerary of the Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley Tour

Hike to Vinicunca and Explore the Red Valley in One Complete Day

Your day begins early with pickup around 4:30 a.m. from your hotel, Airbnb, apartment, or hostel in Cusco city. Once everyone is ready, we start the scenic drive toward the southern highlands, passing quiet villages, farmland, valleys, and mountain views as the Andes begin to wake up.

After approximately two hours on the road, we stop at a local restaurant for breakfast. You will have time to enjoy a warm meal, drink coffee or coca tea, use the restrooms, and prepare for the high-altitude hike ahead.

We then continue by vehicle toward the trailhead near Rainbow Mountain. Before starting the hike, your guide will give a clear safety briefing, explain the route, check the group’s condition, and share useful tips for walking at altitude.

The hike to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace, weather, and altitude conditions. The trail begins gradually and becomes more demanding near the final viewpoint. We walk slowly, take breaks when needed, and focus on reaching the top safely.

Along the way, you will see wide Andean landscapes, local herders, llamas, alpacas, and views of the Ausangate area. This is a real mountain environment, and your guide will help you understand the scenery, the culture, and the conditions of the route.

Once we reach the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, you will have time to rest, take photos, and enjoy the famous colored slopes of Vinicunca. Your guide will explain how the mineral layers created the natural colors and why this mountain has become one of Peru’s most iconic landscapes.

After visiting Rainbow Mountain, we continue toward the Red Valley viewpoint. This area is one of the most beautiful extensions of the route, with deep red hills, open spaces, and a quieter atmosphere than the main viewpoint.

After enjoying the Red Valley, we begin the return hike toward the trailhead. The descent usually takes about 1 hour, depending on trail conditions and group pace.

We then drive back to the restaurant area, where lunch will be waiting for you. After lunch, we return to Cusco, arriving around 5:30 p.m..

All times are approximate. Weather, traffic, road conditions, trail conditions, altitude, and group pace may affect the schedule. The Red Valley visit may depend on safe conditions on the day of the tour.

Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley Travel Information

The Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley Tour is a high-altitude hiking experience in the Vilcanota mountain range near Cusco. Before joining this tour, it is important to understand the altitude, weather, difficulty, and how to plan the experience as part of a wider Peru itinerary.

Location of Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Winikunka, is located in the Peruvian Andes near Cusco. The area is famous for its natural colored slopes, highland communities, llamas, alpacas, and wide mountain views.

You can learn more about the destination in the official MINCETUR Rainbow Mountain / Vinicunca resource and in our Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain guide.

Why Rainbow Mountain Has So Many Colors

The colors of Rainbow Mountain come from natural mineral layers, erosion, and weathering over time. Red, yellow, green, purple, and white tones appear across the slopes, creating one of the most photographed landscapes in the Cusco region.

During the tour, your guide will explain the geology in simple language, so you can understand what you are seeing while enjoying the view.

Altitude and Acclimatization

Rainbow Mountain is located above 5,000 meters / 16,400 feet. The hike is not extremely long, but the altitude makes it demanding. Even strong hikers can feel shortness of breath, tiredness, or headaches at this elevation.

We recommend spending a few days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before this tour. Drink water, avoid heavy alcohol the night before, eat light, and walk slowly. For general health guidance, review the CDC’s travel to high altitudes advice.

If you are planning your acclimatization days, our guides to the Sacred Valley and things to do in Cusco can help you organize your trip before hiking Rainbow Mountain.

Difficulty of the Hike

The hike is moderate to challenging mainly because of the altitude. Most travelers take around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint and around 1 hour to return, depending on pace and conditions.

TreXperience supports the group with an experienced guide, oxygen, first-aid kit, one trekking pole per traveler, and steady pacing. The goal is to enjoy the mountain safely, not to rush.

Red Valley

The Red Valley is one of the most impressive parts of this route. Its deep red hills and open landscapes create a powerful contrast with the colorful slopes of Vinicunca.

This tour includes the Red Valley entrance ticket and guided visit, as long as weather, trail conditions, and group pace allow a safe experience.

Meals on This Tour

This tour includes breakfast and lunch at local restaurants along the route. The breakfast stop gives you time to eat, drink something warm, use the restroom, and prepare for the hike. After the hike, lunch gives you time to rest before returning to Cusco.

Please share any dietary restrictions when booking, so our team can coordinate the best available options with the restaurants.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Rainbow Mountain can be visited year-round, but weather changes quickly at high altitude. The dry season, from May to October, usually offers clearer views. The rainy season, from November to April, can bring clouds, mud, rain, snow, or hail.

Always bring warm layers, rain protection, gloves, sun protection, and good hiking shoes. Even on a sunny day, the viewpoint can feel cold and windy.

How to Combine Rainbow Mountain with Machu Picchu and Cusco

Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu are in different directions from Cusco, so they should be visited on different days. A smart order is to spend time acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, visit Machu Picchu, and then hike Rainbow Mountain when your body is better adapted to the altitude.

For planning, you can review the official UNESCO pages for the City of Cusco and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. You can also read our Machu Picchu complete guide, Machu Picchu circuits guide, and best time to visit Machu Picchu.

Rainbow Mountain vs. Palcoyo

Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca is the classic and more famous colored mountain hike. It is higher, more demanding, and includes the Red Valley extension on this tour.

Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain is usually easier and shorter, with several colorful slopes and a gentler hiking experience. If you prefer a softer alternative, Palcoyo may be a better fit.
