Hiking the Machu Picchu Mountain!
Machu Picchu Mountain is the highest mountain in the area with 3082 meters (10111 ft.), is located in the Machu Picchu District, Urubamba Province, Cusco Region. This mountain rises in the southern area of Machu Picchu. The name Machu Picchu come from the Quechua: Machu (old, or great), and Picchu (mountain) from this Machu Picchu means the great mountain.
Times for Machu Picchu
To enter to Machu Picchu Mountain you need to separate the entrance in advance since they tent run out fast depending on the season. You can choose to shifts to hike this mountain:
The first shift is from 7:00am to 8:00am where 200 people are allowed per day, this shift is perfect to people that stayed the night before at the city of Aguas Calientes, take the early bus and climb this mountain when the sun is still hiding and you can see from top how slowly Machu Picchu gets crowded.
The second shift is from 9:00am to 10:00am, where also 200 people are allowed to enter, this shift is perfect to people that they just did the Inca trail, Salkantay, Lares Trek, Inca Jungle, tours by train, or any other trek that leads to Macho Picchu. This is because you need to explore the citadel of Machu Picchu first and after you can climb the Mountain. To rich the top of the mountain will take about 1.5 hours and to come down similar time. Total climbing at a regular pace will be around 3 hours. It’s important to note that you need to reach the top before 12:00pm when everybody need to come down, there is ranger on top that will not allow you to continue if you are after noon.
How hard is Machu Picchu Mountain?
The Trail is harder and most challenging than Huayna Picchu since is longer and higher. Many people think that Huayna Picchu is a must and it will sold out faster than Machu Picchu Mountain. For my personal appreciation, Machu Picchu Mountain is one of the most beautiful mountains to climb because of the location, and it’s the highest one so one you are on top you will have and amazing view of 360° of all Machu Picchu area. The climbing is steep with a gradual inclination and the beginning and gets harder in the final part. Upon reaching the top you will be rewarded with an incredible view of all mountain around and far below the great Citadel of Machu Picchu. Remember to be very carefully to avoid accidents.
How Much is the entrance to Machu Picchu Mountain?
The Price is depending from where you arriving to Machu Picchu, if you arrive from the Inca Trail, the ticket to the Inca Trail already includes the entrance to Machu Picchu, but if you want to Climb Machu Picchu Mountain, you need to buy a whole new entrance that cost around 75.USD.
