The Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism has released the annual balance of visitors for 2023. This year, the amount of travelers has increased in comparison to the past two years. This rebound is of great importance as the industry was seriously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Balance of the year

The 2023 report reveals that the amount of travelers has increased by over 24% compared to 2022, making a total of more than 2.5 million visitors. The countries with the most travelers to Peru this year were Chile, the United States, and Ecuador. More than half of these tourists came from South America. Additionally, 2.7 million Peruvian tourists left the country during this period.

This is a big advance since the COVID-19 emergency, but it is still far from the pre-pandemic numbers. However, 2023 reached 56.4% of the number of travelers in 2019. Furthermore, in November 2023 alone, there were 11% more visitors than in the same month in 2022—a total of 233,842 people.

Expectations for 2024

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Juan Carlos Matthews, remarked that this is a good balance, considering the social and political situation of the country at the start of the year. He also emphasized the importance of tourism for the economy and growth of the country. The Peruvian Minister also expects a similar or increased number of travelers for 2024.
